My wife's Escape needs new tires which I would like to get her for Christmas. Anybody have any recommendations on a good safe and durable tire? She is mostly highway driving to and from work. We get a few days of snow, average amount of rain. I'm not looking to spend what I spent on my tires (35" BFG) but I want something good. 235/70/16. Any thoughts?

 

I got a couple ideas, but before I go listing tires, can you give me a price range for the set?

 

Maybe $500-$600? I checked out the BFG Long Trails and a set of Goodyears on Tirerack, both got favorable reviews.

 

I got my wife a set of General HTS for her Grand cherokee, and they have been great! They have lots of siping for the winter and ice. They are super quiet, and rate at the top for Consumer Reports and tire rack. I wouldnt do any real off roading with them, but for the roads...they are awesome

I have a recommendation...don't make a set of tires your wife's Christmas present. Getting them around Christmas time?OK. Making that her present? Ummmmm...good luck.

 

I've seen a few people put a bit larger than stock tires on them, it looks awesome. One was the Goodyear Wrangler AT/S or Silent armor's. I forget the other brand I saw, just knew it was larger. From experience, the Goodyear's are great, another good one is Michelin. Go to a site like Discount tire and see what you can get in stock sizes and upsizing.

If you are willing to pay towards the upper end of your range you can get BFG KO's too.

 

Firestone Destination AT. Currently have 37000 on mine, and still should gat another 10 or so. Not teh best off road, but excellent on road, rain snow Etc. Would buy some where other than Firestone though.

 

You must have a geat wife. If I were to as much as hint at considering a set of tires a Christmas gift for her, things would get pretty "frosty."

Thanks for suggestions guys. And no this will not be under the tree for Christmas, its just something she needs, but she is pretty awesome so if our tree were standing in the middle of these, she would be just as thankful compared to anything else. Now my tire fund takes a hit though and it sucks.

Truck is a 2006, current tires are what came with it, size is 235/70/16.

 

if your wanting more of a street tire that does well in snow and rain.. Firestone Destination LE are excellent. Have been running them on a 05 Jeep GC for about 15k miles now and keep them rotated and they are excellent 60k mile tire. If your wanting more of a AT, the Firestone Destination AT, Hankook Dynapro atm or cooper discover atr are great.

 

From what little research I've done on AT tires here lately (past year or so), the GY Silent Armor seems to have rave reviews. It looks pretty sharp too. That's what I'd be going with if I were in the market for an AT. As mentioned, the BFG AT KO is arguably the best all around AT tire you can get, but I'd still get the GY as it looks better. Honestly, IMHO, you can't get a bad AT tire from any of the top manufacturers out there today and any bickering between what one will and will not do is splitting hairs. Show me a bad review on any tire and I'll go find you two rave reviews.

As silly as it may sound, from all the options you've been given here, I would literally pick the one I liked the looks of best. But, I don't do a 'budget' when it comes to tires...I buy what I want regardless. Tires are too expensive to get something you may be bored with or not like a few months down the road. Been there/done that...never again.
