Are LT and P tires the same size?
 

Going to get some new tires for my truck tomorrow. 265/70/17's and wondering beside Load Range, is there any size (diameter) difference between an LT or P series tire?

In general the overall diameter will be very close, all tires vary a bit, based on type and manufacturer. The numbers have meaning: 265 = 265mm from side-to-side, 70 is 70% of the 265 = 185.5mm, that the height from rim to tread. the 17 is the rim, or size of the hole in the center, so that is always the same.

What I have found is different, because one is basically a car tire and the other is a truck tire, is the actual tread-width or contact patch of the road.

The passenger will give you a nicer ride on pavement, the LT tire is all-around tougher. Mounting a "P" tire is like working with warm bubble-gum, mounting a "LT" is like trying to put on a 2-size too small, old stiff dried-out shoe.
