off road highway tires - cheap

I’ve got an 08 4X4 Screw and would like to get more clearance than stock. I’m driving it off-road in the Texas Big Bend area, which mean hard rock and gravel, sand and heavy- duty thorns but not so much mud and snow. It also means some long highway miles, about half of them at posted speed of 80 mph. So, I plan to level the truck and put on 20s to gain clearance. I need a tough tire with heavy tread that will run quiet and efficient on the highway – also inexpensive so I can put holes in em without taking out a loan. It will be, as they say of airplanes, a series of compromises flying in close formation. What's the sweet spot look like? I’d appreciate any constructive feedback.

First do you want an AT or a MT?

based on your needs.
MT: Toyo Open Country Mud Terrains will do fine.

AT: BFG TA KO's will do the trick.

or some nitto terra grapplers

I agree. Also, cheap tires are usually just that, cheap.

Thanks gents. Roger the cheap tires Wandell. I was trying to make a catchy headline. A cheap tire out in the boonies can get to be a real expensive tire in a hurry.

I've also had Michelin XPS Traction recommended. Any experience with the tire? Looks heck for stout. But appears to be only available in a 16.

any tire can get expensive in the boonies. bfg at's or maybe goodyear silent armors. if you travel alone in the middle of nowhere often, i'd have to matching spares just in case, never know what can happen.

For MTs I'd go with Toyo's or KM2's
And for AT's BFG's or Nitto Terra Grappler's.

Good advice Atom. Last trip to the Big Bend I carried two spares. Used one of them plus two plugs and three cans of fix o flat. Not all on the same tire. A great trip!
