Can't get stock wheel covers back on?

I'll come out and say it right now, I feel dumb for asking this but...

I have a 2007 screw XLT with 255/70-17 stock wheels. Since winter is right around the corner here in the northeast , I decided I would take advantage of warm weather we were having today and swap out my 22" summer wheels for OEM wheels before it gets too cold out. So everything went fine with the swap until it came time to put the little chrome cover on that cover the lug nuts. You know the little cover with the ford emblem on it. I noticed there's like a guide pin on the back of the cover that matches up with a hole on the rim. But when I go to snap the cover on it seems like the cover is too big and it falls right off. Am I doing something wrong? Am I retarded? Is there a trick? I've been changing tires for 20+ years and this has never happend to me? I can't figure it out for the life of me, help guys!

Not Sure If This Helps

But I recently picked up a set of OEM 20's from a 2006 Lariat to replace my FX4 18's from my 2004. The center caps from my 18's had the guide pin and wouldn't go on the 20's because the guide hole wasn't on the 20 inch wheel. I dremeled the guide pins off the caps and they just popped right on.

guide pin?

Some of the dumb things just f#*% with your head. Never saw a guide pin on mine they just clip on the lug nuts. Are you using the stock lug nuts? They have a lip on the nut that holds the cap on. They don't need to all be stock but, I'd do 4 so they fit snug. I looked into the FORD anti-theft wheel nuts with the fancy little lip. Don't even look the bastards want 2 times more than any other wheel lock. Cheap (zinc coated) open end Ford locks $80.00 Can. Nice chrome ROUSH locks $37.00 to my door. The down side is the Roush locks are too long to fit under the cap so I cut them down. Don't try this in your garage with a hack saw!

Sounds like you're not using the stock lug nuts. The cap fits directly onto the stock lug nuts. Smaller ones won't work.

I'm pretty sure their the stock lugs. The wheel shop gave these back to me with the wheel covers and my OEM wheels when they put my 22's on last spring. The 22's needed their own special lugs.

I'll try it again today, it was dark out when I was finishing up yesterday. Maybe some day light will help.

OK, its official, I'm an idiot!

Well went out to day during the day light and it made all the difference. Once I was bale tos ee better, I saw that I was lining up the covers right, i just wasn't pushing them on as much as I should've. I didn't realize how deep they sat in the rim.

So anyways, I'm all set now, I apologize for the inconvenience. Thanks for being a part of my dumbness!
