Question for guys running 35's
 

I'm guessing that most of you have stock 3.73 gears. Which with 35's would put you somewhere in the low 3.00's gear ratio range. I know when I had 35's on my 99 Superduty 5.4 with 3.73 ratio,it dogged me down.
Constantly down shifting..
Granted the Superduty was heavier and only 235 horse power, but how much power/MPG loss do you see with your 150's??
I'm thinking of going with 35's on my 04 FX4 5.4 SC
5.5 bed..

I think it drop's the 3.73 gears more in the 3.40 range. I lost about 1 to 2 mpg mainly in stop and go driving. In town I leave my OD off for a little better shifting and braking. Any towing I try to limit to about 3k pounds. I think a programmer would help out but haven't had the time to get one yet. On the highway once you get rolling the mileage isn't too bad. With 35's it's better re-gear and upgrade your brakes and shock's at the same time.:beers:

I have Been running 35's with my 3.55's for a few months now and its not...unbearable, but I will still be re-gearing, Mainly because im going to be upgrading to 38's! :rocker:

skrewd: how bad is it? and did you have the 35s before you had your edge evolution? im currently considering upgrading to 35s on my stock wheels but if its going to kill my performance then im going to hold off...i can do things like intake and programmer if necessary but regearing is just too much money at the moment so if its going to be a requirement then im going to stick with my initial plan of new 17x9 HeloMaxx6 rims with 33 x 12.50 mud terrains. If i can make the 35s work then i would stick with the stock rims and get the increased ground clearance i want.

I have 35s on mine and it bogs down a bit but it isn't to bad. I don't think I will be regearing.

I too have the 3.55 gears with 35's and it isn't toooooo bad. I also have the smaller 4.6L. It gets up and still moves around. my next big buy is def some 4.88's and some Troyer tunes. But I will be able to live as is for awhile.

35's and a 3.73 LS ratio here... I had the 35's before my Edge also. You will notice a power loss, but it isn't too substancial IMO. The truck still moved pretty good, I lost about 1.5-2MPGs...

If you run this set up, you will want a programmer. The EDGE brought me back up to Stock MPGs, and the additional power it gave me surpassed the initial power my truck had when it was stock. Not to mention that I calibrated my speedo to be accurate.

I recommend throwing the 35's on, and get a programmer before you regear. See if you can live with it that way. I won't regear for $ purposes and I don't haul or tow anything significant (just a little pop-up camper). If you do tow a lot or haul a lot, you'll want to regear. But if you're like me and use your truck as a daily driver, off road, etc... and aren't pulling a lot of weight, the 3.73 with a programmer and 35s will be sufficient.

i dont have 3.73 gears unfortunately... i have the 3.55ls gears...so thats why im fairly hesitant to jump into the 35s

Is the difference from 3.55 to 3.73 really all that noticeable?

I was running 35's on my 2000 F150 with 3.55 open. It was still pretty tolerable I guess, I wasn't pulling any heavy though. The truck was totaled in a snow storm last year. I had it for about a month after we put the 35s on it before the accident. Even though it was a short amount of time, it wasn't like it made that huge of a difference that I absolutely wanted to regear. It just comes down to cost and purpose for me, they didn't equal out. :coffee:

I then bought a used JET chip and threw it in, she picked up some. So, I think you'll be good with 35's if you can pick up some hp, like a programmer.

I don't think so, but could see how it would be if I towed some sizable weight. I have only pulled a pop up. Daily driving though, it's worth it IMO. I don't regret it. :thumbsup: And have no intention of regearing. I'm pretty happy with the end result so far.

Thats cool to know, because at some point in the future I will probably be running either 33's or more likely 35's and hopefully will be lifting it. I already have an Edge, but I don't think I would be able to afford re-gearing after paying for tires/lift etc. Oh and I have a 2000 with 3.55LS, so pretty much the same as your older truck JK....what level on the edge are you running 2 or 3?

2- I usually always run this unless I'm off roading, then I run 3. I can't afford gas to be running 3 all the time. :lol: :thumbsup:

Not that much of an MPG difference either, for me anyway:cool:

Yeah I always run 2 now, not cause I really want to but I can't afford high octane especially with the way the prices are now. Yeah for me MPG is about the same....I think worse with level 3, but thats because I was putting my foot in it alot especially with how nice the upper RPM's are with that tune :)

If I knew How bad my MPG was going to go down. I would have never gotten my 35's. Its terrible I drive it everyday and My wallet is hurting bad! I lost almost a 100 miles per tank:mad:
