Silent Armor vs. Revo's
First off, I'm looking for a 33" tire for 18's. I really love the BFG AT's and have had a lot of success with them in the past but I'm thinking about going a different route for 2 reasons:
1. Try something new. A lot of people have the BFG's 2. A big one- $$$$- I'm gonna need new tires soon and if I could save $500 (based off prices I've been quoted for BFG's $1200 and then around $700 for these 2) that would really help me out right now. I don't do a ton of offroading but I hunt, fish, and camp so I need to get through a few things every now and then. Which would be a longer lasting tire that would fit my off and on road needs as well as my budget- Goodyear Silent Armor or Bridgestone Revo's or neither? Thanks in advance! |
You can get Nitto Terra Grapplers from discount tire for $219 each (285/65/18, which is a 33) Also, check out the Cooper Zeon LTZ (only available at discouttire.com) they look like a pretty awsome tire.

I've always found the GY Wrangler AT/S a very good all around tire, the new Silent Armor's are 285' (nice size) and are better still. Not noisey, but a little and great for all purpose. For what you need, get them.

I love my silent armors great traction, low road noise. cant wait to try em out this winter.

I have just ordered a set of the Goodyears. When I went looking for ratings, the Silent Armors were rated higher than the Revo's at Tire Rack.

Thanks guys! I saw the reviews too and saw that the Silent Armor's are higher than the Revo's but I just wanted to see some of your opinions. How do the Silent Armor's compare to the BFG's? My only draw back to the Silent Armor's is that they aren't as aggressive as I'd like.

In my opinion you can't go wrong with the Revo's, I had them on my old truck on this one I decided to try something new and go with the Toyo's. I'll be purchasing the Revo's again in a few months, the Toyo's weren't a bad tire but I prefer the Revo's. The BFG's are a very good tire also I have a friend that swears by them and I'm tempted to get them this time around but I don't want to have buyers regreat like I did with the Toyo's.

I am in the same boat that you are.. I would go with the Revo's. We have the Silent Armors on our work trucks (F150s and Colorados). They are a nice tire, but they lack the look of an aggressive tire. Plus, I have never ever had good last till the end. About 1/2 way through the thread, those bunch of little knobs become one big knob. We had Wranglers on our Rangers and after 20,000 miles, the edge tread turned into one big strip and they sucked int he rain and snow.
It seems like the Silent Armors wont have they problem, but in my experience, it is a Goodyear if they last that long. I have had great experience with Coopers. Take a look at these. http://www.coopertire.com/html/produ...discoverer_atr I am on the fence with them. I found hem for 125 a piece for the stock 18" size. I wish they had one just a little bigger. Well, they do, but it is a heavier side wall, and thus more money.. |

I like the Silent Armor size 265/70/18 I believe is what it was which comes out to be a 33x11.00. It is one of the only ones thought that says Load Range E. What does that mean?

It is for carrying a heavier weight. For an F150, I like at least a load range C LT tire. Take a look at the LT265/70R17. They have a load range C and an LR E. You can see the difference in carrying ability.
For the LR C you would run it at about 40 psi (if max 50) for a F150, the run the LR E at about 50 (if max 80) for the F150, and you will get about the same load carrying ability. As far as P series tires, on a light truck, the rating on the tire is not the max load carrying ability. It is less. Most sits that show P series tires for light trucks will have a warning stating that. That and the fact that the side walls are too flexibile, making the truck lean in the turns is why I do not like P series tires. |
In 265/70R17, Load Range C is actually lower than p-rated. I don't agree with Kingfish on the load range for 1/2 ton trucks. P-rated tires have anough load for almost every rear GAWR even after taking 10% off the tire load rating. Everyone has their own opinion on how their truck should ride, so one may prefer stiff ride vs. smooth ride.

i have the silent armors and they are great no noise pretty good off road traction i cant wait to take them in the snow. after i just got a set of them my neighbor told me about the good year wrangler mt/r i think they cost a little more then the silent armors and are a little noisier but they get better all around traction.

I'm on my second set of P rated Revos on my 2003 5.4 Supercab (265 70 17). I changed the first set out at 60,000 miles. I really like the tread pattern on the Revos and they seem to be pretty quite on the highway. The LTs will be a little stiffer riding but I would think it would be hard to notice. I did see that the tread depth on the LTs is a little deeper. I'm a Michigan snowmobiler so I take full advantage of the Revos snow traction abilities.
