don't understand tire sizes
 

I've searched, but no help. Maybe you guys can. I have a '06 XLT with stock 17" wheels. I don't understand tire sizes and what works with what, what will rub and so forth.

I don't have the funds to do a lift. (I really want a 4" lift). However, I do have enough funds for the leveling kit, either 2 or 2 1/2 inch.

I want the biggest tires that will fit on the stock wheels (17's in my case), without rub. I'm thinking some Nittos AT, or will settle for BFG's AT. I like the stock wheels, just wish I had the 18's or 20's.

What size tire should I be looking for on the 17's that I have.
Would having stock 18's or 20's make choosing sizes easier? And, if so know anybody whos got them.

I'd add the leveling kit. This will allow you to fit 285/70-17's (33x11.50), or 305/65-17's (33x12.50) if you have a 4x2 or (295/70-17's (34x12.00), 305/70-17's (34x12.50), or 315/70-17's (35x12.50) if you have a 4x4. As for rim size, I think there is a little better selection of tires in 18 and 20 inch sizes than 17's. Maybe there are just more tires I personally like in 18 and 20 inch sizes.

No problem. Keep in mind those size recommendations were for using an OEM wheel and a 2 or 2.5 inch leveling kit. Also, do you have a 4x4 or 4x2?

Wandell....So the 315/70/17 is basically a 35x12.5? Would those fit on a '97-'03 F-150 4x4 OEM 17" rim? If I can do this, I might hit up the hummer dealership for my next set of tires b/c if I remember, someone told me people take off the 315's that are originally on some of the hummers and replace them with aftermarket wheels. Think this would work?

Yes, several people have done that. You will have some rubbing on the frame at full steering lock with the 315/70-17's.
