10 ply

Ok heres a question i cant seem to find an answer to I was wanting to know what the bad side to running a high ply tire 7-10 ply i know there wear very very well but what if anything will it do to the truck its self if anything and does it make it harder to control the truck any?.....now as far as making it stiff and riding a bit rough I dont mind that too much unless it is a really really stiff ride anyway any help would be great.....by the way the tire is the toyo 275/70/18 Open Country A/T One more thing what is a high ply tire made for anyway??

The ride is going to be pretty stiff with those tires. Unless you have 1000 pounds of tools, etc. I would leave those to someone else. These tires are made for trucks that carry heavy loads most of the time, unlike the factory tires and most replacement tires that we all buy.

Ian is right. Load range "E" (10 ply) tires are more for class "A" motorhomes, heavy duty work trucks etc. The sidewalls are stiffer, hence the firmer ride. The passenger car tires (such as on the f150's) have more flex in the sidewall

275/70/18 Toyo....is it an LT275??

For the F150 stick with a LR C or D at most. To get the ride softer with a LR E you would need to lower the air pressure below what it should be. Not a good thing to do. I do not recommend P series tires. I personally don't feel they are up to snuff for a 1/2 ton PU.

Harder ride AND less traction in the corners and on ripples type of bumps due to the loss of side wall flex. True truck tires get loud when wearing down too.

10 ply tires also can weigh quite a bit more than 4 or 6 ply.

This means at least a small loss of power.

I ordered load rang D tire for my 04 fx4 and they sent me bfg load range E tires (10 ply). I already had them installed when I noticed it. At first it felt like I was driving a log wagon, but I became very used to it and love them. I could care less what they are supposed to be on, but if you want a ride like stock tires, dont get em.

Well I talked to the guy at my local tire store today about the 275/70 18 Silent Armor which in my opinion is a really great looking tire anyway its a 10 ply he said the only difference is the ride is a little stiffer that is if you run 80 pounds of air....he said you can run 65-70 pounds and there wont be that different plus he said the wear on them is super like I said before if it is a little stiffer... well then it rides like a truck... plus that size will bring me to the size i want which is a 33x11 that should fill everything in right nice

You definitely don't want to run 80, and 65-70 would be too high too. 80 would put the weight the tires could handle to almost twice the weight of your truck. I had BFG LR E tires some years ago on my 98 F150 and ran them at 50, which for the vehicle was perfect as far as wear. It was still stiff compared to LR C.

I put some michelin LTX M/S 235/80/17 load range E tires on mine, and I think that the better quality tire (michelin ltx) and size more than makes up for the 10 ply... In fact, I think my vehicle handles better/rides smoother overall, even on the snow and ice we have now (I have studded/siped winter tires, but havent put them on yet)

Not to start a war here but a 10 ply rating tire does NOT mean you need to run more air. anyone who says so knows nothing about tires. it only means that you CAN in order to haul more weight. putting anything over 40 in any tire on a half ton would just be stupid in my opinion because a halfton should not carry the amount of weight where it would need more. a 10 ply rating tire at 40 pounds will not feel that much stiffer then a 6 ply at 40 pounds.
