Getting ready for new tires...which ones? Wandell-any tips?
Hey all,
As the title suggests I'm getting new tires (51,000 miles). After doing much reading on these forums, I have boiled it down to three tire sizes (I've left out tire brands-that'll be decided after I decide on the right size). Here's what I have: 2003 F-150 FX4 5.4L, Stock 265/70/17 tires and stock rims. No modifications made to suspension or lift (not including the 3" included in the FX4 package). 3.73 gears. Here's what I'm thinking about: 285/70/17 305/70/17 315/70/17 What do you say would be the best bet for me? Of course I want LARGER (the bigger the better), but don't want any rubbing. I will be cranking the t-bars to level the truck, if that helps. I'm not opposed to cutting to make space, but want to be able to use the truck offroad. Also, I'm a bit strapped for cash, so I don't want to add any lift kits for now...So basically, what setup is good for my stock setup? . Thanks for all your help! Ryan |

No modifications made to suspension or lift (not including the 3" included in the FX4 package). 285/70 IMHO looks the best (right proprtions). I personally wouldn't go larger based on performance penalties alone, but not everyone notices that. My 285's Cost wise, you can pick up take off H2 tires (315/70) + a body lift for labout the same as 285's, but longer term I think you'll accelerate drivetrain/suspension wear. Plu,s I think it looks bad on stock height trucks. |
I'd go with 285/70-17's or 295/70-17's.

Hey Guys,
I've got an 02 S-crew at stock height and am on and off all kinds of developed and not so developed construction sites. A local tire chain guy suggested a 285 75 r16 LT tire. 1, will this fit? 2, will it kill my speedo calibration?? 3, will it throw off my shift points??? Thanks! |
You can fit 285/75-16's but I wouldn't go larger than 265/75-16's without a lift. It will throw off your speedo. How much depends on your OEM tire size.

If I was to go with the 295/70/17's you recommended above, what kind of backspacing do you think would look good. I want a wider stance, but don't want it to look...well, you know... :bandito: ! I'm looking at the Nittos that cctexas31 has on his rig, but am curious as to what you thought would be acceptable backspacing. Thanks in advance for any tips. Ryan |
Well, I've been doing some research on tires, and it just occurred to me that maybe I want some new wheels to go with the new shoes. My only concern: price (and hopefully the new wheels look good).
Anyone know where I can get some affordable wheels to match say some Nitto Terras that are 295/70/17? Or should I scrap that idea and get 18 inch wheels and possibly the same Nittos? Thanks...this forum rocks. |
Eagle Alloy, Pro Comp and American Racing all make reasonably priced 17x9 inch wheels that would work great. I believe most have 5 inches of backspacing. I would go with a 9 or 10 inch wheel with 4 1/2 or 5 inches of backspacing.

Here is a pic of my truck its a 06 f150 supercrew 4x4 with a 2.5 leveling kit.

I have an '03 KR and put MB Motoring 17x8.5" Precise wheels on it and 285/70/17 BFG's on. Take a look. And mine is also bone stock suspension. No lifts or tightened torsion bars. I think the 295/70/17 Nittos would good as well. I like the white letters myself personally tho. nitto doesn't make the white letters I don't believe.
