P285/75 R16 on 98 F150 Stock 16" Rims?

Does anyone have or know of any problems, if I were to put a set of Bridgestone Dueler Revo P285/75/16 tires, on standard (Not Off-Road) Ford stock 16" rims?

I have a 1998 F150 XLT 4X4 Ext. Cab.

I'm assuming a tire dealer won't put them on for you. Can I get away with putting those on, or would I have to go buy a set of wider rims?

Thanks
Mike

I have those exact tires, model and size, on my 97 F150 4x4 ext cab with the 4.6. I did buy aftermarket wheels that were the same size or maybe one inch wider with the same offset. They need a rim between 7.5" and 9.00" wide. The tires have a nice look on the truck and makes it look much more like a 4x4. My tires have 60,000 miles on them. Best truck tire I ever had.

If you go to tirerack.com and look at all the A/T tires they have the best rating by far. They are not cheap and they are not the most expensive either. Compared to several other truck tires (A/T) I've had they are the best in snow, dry pavement, rain, puddles, cornering, dirt, ride and noise. I will be getting another set.

Here are the drawbacks. When turning the wheel from side to side they slightly rub the factory mudguards. It hasn't hurt the tires or the mud guards. It does make people look from time to time when they hear the rubbing noise in a parking lot. But it is very minor. I still plan on getting the same size again. You will lose performance when it comes to acceleration. The larger rotating mass DOES rob your power. And your speedo will be off around 5mph. Tire wear has been excellent.

Would it help mudguards/make a difference if I added a, Add-A-Leaf Kit to the truck?

I have some Uniroyal 285-16's on my 97 F150 4x, on some discontinued Progressive rims. I like the rims because they seem to be the stock offset, etc and do not stick out like some others. No problems, I had it for 22k miles. Wear is fine.

I do think they suck up some power, as, with the 4.6, it's kinda lazy at 70 mph. But it tows fine at 70 with OD off. It also makes driving at 35 mph a pain, but they look good and otherwise are fine. Has stock gears.

I've been running 285 75 r16's on my superduty for over a year with the stock 16x7 rims with no problem. Makes the tire look a little rounded though.

It would help clearance if you lifted up the front of the truck a little. However, there are no leafs involved, and you can get about 2" of lift in the front for free by cranking up the torsion bars.

But.... That is only a 33" tire and will fit A-OK with no problems anywhere. The later year 4x4 trucks with the same bodystyle come with a 32" tire fron the factory. You can fit up to 315/75/16s with no lift on these trucks. There is one guy on here that has that tire size, but on aftermarket wheels. You will be fine with the 285's.

A block goes between the axle and leaf springs, effectively lifting the truck.

I just put 285-75-16s on mine and all I did was tighten up the t-bars just enough to make it sit the same in the front as it does in the back. I got exactly the look I wanted. No clearence trouble whatsoever!
