Brake Dust - Huge Problem

This may have been asked before but I have a question regarding my F150 SCREW and for that matter my Expedition. Both vehicles are basically brand new, the F150 has only 8,000 miles and has the orignal factory brakes.

I have some nice 22" wheels on it and the brake dust that comes off these damn front brakes is horrible. I am washing / cleaning my wheels twice a week. Its dark, dirty and nasty in just a few days of driving.

What the hell is wrong with the factory brakes? Why is there so much dust? What can I do to address this issue?

I would like to know also! I am not hard on brakes and the dust is really bad. How are the Hawk pads? I am thinking of trying them!

Factory pads are usually pretty soft, to give a good brake feel. Premium Aftermarket pads have less feel, last longer, and make less dust.

Can't really help you with the brake dust problem; but a nice coat of polymer wax (Meguiar's NXT, Zaino or Nufinish) on the wheels will make cleaning them easier.

Hawk HPS = fantastic pad for performance/stopping power.

But they are not low-dust.

ceramic pads

I also have wheels on my truck and did not like all the brake dust on them so
I went to a ceramic pad and so far I love not dealing with all the brake dust.
Very little brake dust but it does take longer to slow down.

Make 'em quiet, they get dusty, but they do stop...

Less dust, they may be noisier and harder on rotors; stopping performance may not be as good as it can be...

Life's full of compromises. Ceramic pads or dust shields might be your next step.

I added Kleenwheels dust shields. So far I am very happy. Had them for several months and the wheels stay clean. This weekend I'll probably pull off the wheels and see how the brakes look. I don't feel warping, etc but I'm gonna double check it.

I love the fact that those dust shields physically block the dust... But I love the look of brakes behind the wheels also.

Do you think that the shields affect brake cooling at all?

I had dust shields on my Porsche. Caused problems with brakes (fading, wearing out) because according to the Porsche "Technician" they DO affect cooling. Maybe the slotted or drilled shields are better, I don't know. Once I removed them, no problems.

Your stock brakes are designed for the stock wheels/tires. Remember that putting those 22's on increased your rolling mass, making your stock braking system work that much harder. which = more brake dust & more wear. You can do a couple of things: dust shields, ceramic pads, use brake dust repellent, or upgrade to a set of bigger rotors. i.e. baer eradi speed +1, which will increase your overall stopping power to better than stock, due to the larger rotors. Michelin makes a brake dust repellent, found around here at AUTOZONE. haven't used it yet, but planning on trying some. will let you know.
