Best All Terrain Tire

Looking for an All Terrain tire in 285-70-17. I've looked at the BFG A/T and I will more than likely purchase those if I can't find anything else. BUT, I am looking for a tire that is a bit more aggressive looking without going to a M/T tire.

dye7barrel 05-24-2005 02:34 PM

I have the BFG A/T's on my truck and I love them. I was a little unsure about losing the "'agressive look" of my truck by going from BFG M/T to A/T but I was very happy with the switch. Much better road manners and so on.

wandell 05-24-2005 04:12 PM

The BFG's are probably the most aggressive all terrian tire available.

GA FX4 05-24-2005 04:45 PM

BFG AT's!!!

Miles73003 05-24-2005 05:21 PM

Yea, I figured they were the most aggressive ones on the market, and it does seem that everyone I've heard from loves the performance of the BFG A/T's. On to a new questions, where is the cheapest place to get a set of 4?? Thanks for the quick responses, it's much apprecciated.

Johngs 05-24-2005 08:35 PM

If you have a Sams near you, I would look there. I got my 265s for $146 each, but that was nearly a year ago...

wild-mtn-rose 05-25-2005 02:09 AM

I love mine and got them at SAM's as well. They were a little pricier than what Johngs paid but everything is a little pricier up here :( Terrific tires though!!

APT 05-25-2005 06:34 AM

There are not many 285/70R17 tires availible. The BFG AT is the best in that size. I'm not too happy with performance. but I appear to be the only one. I believe that size is on national backorder, so you may have to wait, or get lucky with a local place that has them in stock. If you can get them for $800 OTD, you're doing great! I wouldn't spend more than $900, though.

Tires

The BFG's 285/70/17 run $196 before taxes, fee's etc here at Sams club, but like everyone else said they are on national back order. I went for the Nitto Terra Grapplers in the 295/70/17 and really love them (So Far) I just got them and got them on Monday. They look good and I paid $150 each plus shipping of about $25 per tire. Installation of $10 each. The price is good, and the tires are nice on the road as well.

While BFG make a good tire they are a tad hyped up in my opinion, but still in the top 3 AT, I would look into Revo's they are cheaper and IMO a better AT then BFG's go to tirerack.com and do the research.

Revo's will be your best friend.

GQQSE 05-25-2005 09:55 AM

I don't think you can classify these as an all terrrains, but I just got a set of the Pro-Comp X-terrains and I love em. For sure more aggressive than the BFG AT's, but they'll also be a more noisy and less mileage, but they're not as bad as M/T's.

jcsc 05-25-2005 11:57 AM

Do the Bridgestone's come in a 17? I haven't been able to find'em.

92max - got any close-up pics of your Nittos? I'm trying to decide btw the BFGs and Nittos.

mshane1 05-25-2005 12:13 PM

I was in the same boat between the BFGs and the Nittos, the thing that swayed me was that people are saying they are getting about 35k miles out of the nittos and 50-60k out of the BFGs. When I drop that much scratch on a tire I want it to wear for a while. I drive 105 miles round trip a day to work so the Terra Grapples just didn't make sense. Just my .02....

jcsc 05-25-2005 12:28 PM

Thx Shane...that makes the decision a no-brainer. Now if I can only find a set of the BFGs.

APT 05-25-2005 12:32 PM

Revos come in 265/70R17, the OEM size, but no larger for 17" rims.

getting about 35k miles out of the nittos
 I have well over 40K on my 285/60 18inch Nitto Terra Grapplers, and I have lots of meat left. They have been a great tire for me, in a difficult to find size.

mshane1 05-25-2005 01:02 PM

When I was looking at tires, I did a search and asked the question here and on other ford sites along with talking to a couple of local tire dealers. The consensus was around 35K. Don't get me wrong, I think the Terra Grapplers are a better looking tire than the BFG but for my money I want to run with the one that is going to last the longest....

GDDYUP 05-25-2005 02:19 PM

I've got the Nitto Terra Grapplers in 285/75/16 mounted on my new wheels. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten them mounted on my truck yet, hopefully by Friday if the damn rain lets up!!!

They are a very tough looking tire. The tread pattern looks aggressive and I like the look of the extra "grippers" just over the tread onto the sidewalls. I was swaying between the BFG A/Ts and the Nittos but went with the Nittos because I could get them cheaper and wanted something a little different than what everyone else around here has. The mileage issue didnt matter much to me since I only drive the truck about 8000 miles a year anyways. One of the great things about working in my local town's fire dept.... 5 mile round trip! :beers:

I just got a set of 4 A/T ko 265/70/17's installed yesterday & those were on backorder as of a couple of weeks ago but when I went in the day before yesterday to check again they showed the warehouse had 12 now so maybe BFG got "caught-up" on things? This was a small local guy & I got em for $187 ea. "out the door" definetly the best price around here (I dindt bother checking WallyWorld (WalMart) as (A) Id rather give more money to someone local & (B) I wouldnt want them to put a wrench on my sons bicycle let alone one of my vehicles). 4 Wheel Parts had a great price online the other day of I believe $168 or so a piece w/free shipping - then you have to find someone to mount/balance unless your lucky enough to have access to that type of equipment. I like the BFG line-up & have great performance from them on many different vehicles over the years. The original Goodyear Wranglers that came on the truck lasted 30K miles & I think I can get 40-50 out of the BFG's.

zrein7 05-26-2005 04:15 PM

I'm happy with my BFG A/Ts

tmanxx 05-29-2005 01:45 AM

Just doing a quick search, I found these tires with these spec's and sizes.

http://home.comcast.net/~tmanscs/tires.jpg

My first choice would be the 275 Wrangler MT/Rs.
Secondly, if they would fit, I'ld chose the Toyo 285s.

But, my next tire purchase will require me to get some with a mileage warranty. I chew through them kinda fast.

Zamboni68 05-29-2005 01:57 AM

I would still go with the BFG-AT-KO's....never been disappinted with them, especially the "updated" model (i.e. the KO's).
