New wheels & rubber
 

Hello all,

I am wanting to put new wheels and new rubber on my '04 F150 XLT 4x4. I would like lager wheels and rubber, but also don't want to install any sort of a lift kit. I shopped around and and found a wheel that I like and would like to ask if it would fit my truck. The size of the wheel is 18x9.. would this work? Also, what tire size could I use for this wheel that would fit my truck? I was thinking LT285/70R18??

What about the width, which in this case is 9". Could I go larger or would I rub?

I know 17" wheels came stock on the 04, so would going to a lager wheel cause any issues? I think the wheels and tires that came stock on the truck look too small, but I just want to make sure that putting large wheels on would not allow the tires to hit at any time.

One last thing, I just want to make sure that the bolt pattern is "6 on 135mm" I think it is, but the owners manual does not say a thing about bolt patterns..

Yes, your bolt pattern is 6x135mm. No, going to a larger wheel is not a problem. However, finding a tire that will fit without a lift will be. I've never seen a 285/70-18 which would work out to be approximately a 34x11.00-18 tire. Wheel width and backspacing is critical on these trucks. What is the backspacing on the wheels you want? I know that BlkButy fit 325/60-18 (33x13.50) Nitto Terra Grapplers with 18x9 Eagle wheels (5 inches of backspacing) on his 04 by installing a 2.5 inch leveling kit. If you went with a 17x9 inch wheel with 5 inches of backspacing and 285/70-17's (33x11.50), it may fit without any lift.:confused:

Maybe I should go for a smaller wheel then? I started to look around a little more and am thinking maybe a 16x8 would work well with a P285/70R16 ? I don't really want a huge wheel & tire, just something that fills the wheel well a little better than stock (not to mention the General's that come stock are the worst tires I've ever owned in my life)

I can get that size in something like an toyo open country M/T or BFG A/T...

16 inch wheels will not fit your truck. The brakes are too large. You will have to use a 17 inch or larger wheel.

Yup, just figured that one out... Just got back from the wheel shop. Going to go with 17x8 I think. Still not sure about the rubber. I was leaning towards the Toyo Open Country M/T but the tire shop guy said they are not worth the $$$.. He is getting me prices, but said they are far more expensive than other tires in the same class.

Anyone have anything to comment on the Open Country?.. My second choice would be the Geolanders I guess... I want something with a very Aggressive tread .. just something that looks mean.. I went to all of the manufacturer websites and basically they were the only two that caught my eye but if anyone else has any suggestions ...

Well tires are one of those things that you tend to get what you pay for. Personally, I would stick with a quality, name brand tire. If you want a mud terrian, I would suggest looking at the BFG MT KM, Goodyear Wrangler MTR or Toyo Open Country MT. The Pro Comp MT and XT are also pretty good tires.
