I never paid much attention. Never had any problems with rear drum brakes on my last 6 Ford trucks, I have no idea why they have huge discs on the rear now. The fronts do 80% of the braking anyway. I put 200K miles on my 88 F150, most of that pulling trailers. I changed the rear brakes at 120K and they were less than halfway worn out, just slightly glazed since they didn't really do anything.

I don't expect to ever have to mess with my rear brakes before 150K on this truck, so it's not a concern.

Yea i was wondering the same thing. why the need for the big rotors on the rear? i wonder if they also take different calipers than the fronts?......thanks for the reply rockyj.

Diameter wise, yes, they're big. But they don't have the thickness or cooling fins to dissipate heat like the fronts do.
