What size tires?

What size tires should I get for my 01' F-150 Extended Cab 4x4? I am probably going with the Performance Accessories 3" lift. Does anybody have pictures of a f-150 with a lift and nice tires? If so send to Honda_400ex13@hotmail.com

I'd suggest a 16x10 inch wheel with a 305/70-16 (33x12.50) tire. You could fit a 315/70-16 (35x12.50) if you also crank up the torsion bars and trim a little plastic off the front bumper's lower valance. I wouldn't advise going with the 35's unless you want to regear your truck as they will put a strain on your engine and drivetrain. Several people have done it but no one is raving about the performance with their stock gears.
I have some pics in my gallary of my Screw with a 3 inch body lift, with 16x10 Eagle wheels and 285/75-16 (33x11.50) BFG AT KO's. Just do a search for "wandell".

Wandell...you seem to be the "guru" around here...can you answer some simple questions for me then?

What is the OEM backspace and bolt pattern (2004 S.Crew Lariat-18" rims)? ...you have to forgive me as I'm a recent Ford convert and know much more about Chevy...

wandell 03-17-2005 10:33 PM

The bolt pattern is 6x135mm. I've been told the OEM backspacing on the 04-05 wheels is 5 1/2 inches by members here and at FTW. You could always pull one and measure to be sure.

Zamboni68 03-18-2005 07:29 PM

I will pull them soon.....thanks!

Hey wandell if i got 33x12.50 would i have to regear for the power? Also is the 16x10 wheel on my truck now or do i have to buy those too? How much do they cost and what brand tire should go with? I think I will go with the 33x12.50 and the 16x10. do u have any websites with those tires and wheels? What does the 12.50 mean? like urs is a 11.50 what is the difference?

speeddemon13 03-18-2005 07:49 PM

also would i need the torsion keys? are they reliable and worth it? do u have any links and prices to those?

wandell 03-18-2005 10:51 PM

My truck has the 5.4 engine, 3.55's gears and 33 inch tires. I didn't regear and am happy with the performance. What engine and gears do you have? If you have a 4.6 or 5.4 engine, you probably won't have to regear unless you tow or haul heavy loads on a regular basis.
As for wheels, the OEM Ford wheels are either 16x7 or 17x7.5. So you don't have 16x10's unless you already have an aftermarket wheel.
As far as sizing, a 305/70-16 is the same as a 33x12.50-16. It's just two different ways of sizing. 33x12.50-16 means the tire is approximately 33 inches tall, 12 1/2 inches wide (from sidewall to sidewall) and fits on a 16 inch wheel. 305/70-16 means the tire's tread is 305mm wide, it's 70% tall as it is wide, and it fits on a 16 inch wheel.
Also, you do not need replacement torsion bar adjustment keys or a 3 inch body lift to fit 305/70-16's on a 16x10 inch wheel. You will have to crank up the torsion bars or trim about and inch of plastic off the front bumper's lower valance to fit this combo without a lift. Personally, I think this combo looks great with a 3 inch body lift.
As far as a tire, I'd recommend a quality all terrian radial tire. Some of the better ones are the BFG AT KO, Nitto Terra Grappler and Toyo Open Country AT.

THANX!!!!

Thanks "wandell" you have been a VERY big help. I will probabaly go with the 3" performance accessories lift, 33x12.50-16 and 16x10 wheels, does goodyear have any good offroad tires? cause my step dad gets a discount on goodyear and probably wheels too so i can get them for cheaper, i need some websites for some good tires cause i cant find any with my moms slow computer, thanks for your help, if i have any questions and cant find you on the f150 online forums, whats your email? :rocker:

speeddemon13 03-19-2005 09:29 AM

also what is backspacing, yall keep talking about it and i am lost, lol

speeddemon13 03-19-2005 09:48 AM

also when i am looking on websites it doesnt say 16x10 it just says 16 and how do i know what other size they are talking about? http://discounttire.com/dtc/assignWh...001&vid=005978 it says that 16 or 17 are already on my truck, so i need to get the 10 part

wandell 03-19-2005 10:35 AM

Goodyear makes a couple of 305/70-16's which is the same as a 33x12.50-16. The Goodyear Wrangler MTR is an excellent mud terrian tire. The Wrangler ATS is also a very good all terrian tire. If most of your driving is on the highway, you will probably be better off with an all terrian tire.
4Wheel Parts Wholesalers has a pretty good selection of off road style wheels and products. They sell Eagle Alloy wheels, Mickey Thompsom Wheels, American Racing Wheels and their own line of wheels called X Treme Alloys. All of these are good, inexpensive wheels. They can also make you a good deal sometimes on package deals with wheels with the tires already mounted and balanced.
As far as backspacing, it is the distance from the mounting surface of the wheel (where it bolt to the truck) to the edge of the rear lip. The backspacing on the OEM Ford wheels is 4 1/2 inches which is also what most aftermarket wheels for our trucks also have.

speeddemon13 03-19-2005 11:06 PM

hey wandell i have 17" rims on my truck already and my dad wants me to keep 17's so should i get 33xs12.50-17 instead of -16?

wandell 03-19-2005 11:27 PM

Yeah. A 33x12.50-17 or 305/65-17 on a 17x10 inch wheel will fit the same. It doesn't make any difference if you use 16, 17 or 18 inch wheels as long as the tires height and width is the same. You just cannot go any smaller than a 16 inch wheel because a 15 inch wheel will not fit over your brakes. The only advantage to the 16 inch wheels is you have a much wider selection of tires and wheels. 16 inch tires and wheels are also a little cheaper than 17's.

speeddemon13 03-20-2005 09:23 PM

Hey also my dad is kind of "iffy" about the performance accessories lift because its only $170. He thinks it will mess up my truck or break or something. My friend has one because his parents bought it for someone else and it will fit my truck and i can buy it from them for 150. How do i find out what size the rims are like 17x ?. So alls i have to get is tires. I am going to go to discount tires and get some prolly cause they are cheaper. What is a good website for cloth floor mats and stock ford parts?
