ilmagill: Have you had any problems running those 285/75R16's on your stock rims?
How much was your Body lift and where did you had it installed?

Thanks.

I have yet to have any problems with the 285's and rubbing. And they seem to be perfect on the stock rims. I got the body lift installed at off-road warehouse (escondido0...for 4 285/75/16 bfgs mounted and balanced with the body lift, labor, and rear bumper brackets it was 1100 and some change. I think that makes the actual lift cost...about about 400.

ilmagill, I was looking at the same tires but backed off because the rim width range is 7.5-9.0 and I also have stock 16x7 but can you tell me if yours stick outside of the body of the fenders when viewed from the rear? Don't want to look like one of those small imports with wheels hanging out. Also did you do any off setting? You say you don't rub and I'm concerned about rubbing when turning wheels lock to lock either way. Because of the above I'm looking at 165s or 175s but you might change my mind. When you lifted does it compare to a stock 4WD?

ilmagill, man I keep messing up - sorry, meant to say 265s & 275s. Guess subconciously I have severe reservations about going to larger tires.

For 1999 and up to recalibrate the speedometer you have to go back to ford, because its all electronic. I'm sure they could help you out a bit at ford....but i checked my speedometerat the mobile radar stations and its dead on...except that the odometer is off. I still can't figure out why, so i have to take it back to ford cause everything should be off when i got the new tires....unless they never calibrated it from the 3.08 and 235/70/16's. I've heard that 4x4's can get 285/75/16's with just a little crank of the torsion bars...but some dealers already crank them, i think.

Ilmgill, I'm no mechanic but during my research I came across a write up on Speedometer Gears by an Erich Bozzer at www.boss302.com/speedo.htm you might want to check out. Though it pertains to the Mustang the theory should still be applicable. Also, in my case since it's a '97 I can fool with VSS but in your case as you've stated it will involve probable computer reprogramming. Still check out the article, it explained, to me atleast, what the math behind the calculators was.

ilmagill, you're going to make me dish out some big bucks! Those pics looked great! This leads me to my next question. Did your friend re-calb the speedometer? I've been doing extensive research on doing this tire upgrade and have located many tire calculators. The best I can figure right now is that I have a 4R70W transmission from the "U" code on the certification label but as yet have to figure out how many drive teeth are used to run the driven gear of the VSS. I pulled my VSS and the driven gear is red with 21 teeth. Thought I could back into the drive gear but when I plug in all the numbers it comes out to approximately 8.5 teeth and I know this isn't correct. Granted there is probably some acceptable range but right in the middle is throwing me. I'm going to have to crawl under the truck and get the number off the transmission tag and hope my local dealer can help me out. But again, thanks for the pics!

Ilmagil, is the white one yours or your friend's? What's the lift on it? My truck looks identical but its stock height. I have the Bridgestone 265/75/16's and want to go bigger but I'm not sure I want to lift it. That truck looks very cool, what size are the tires?
