Question Bed mounted spare carrier

I have been pricing some bed mounted spare tire carriers and wow! Do they think I'm a moron, or made of money? 250 bucks for the one they showed on trucks. I called West Virginia Steel and got some prices on some 2" square tubing and some plate steel. Total will be about 15 bucks. All I need to do now is find some one to weld the parts after I get them fitted with the grinder. Then have them powercoated. I figure the whole shebang will end up costing me 50-60 dollars.
Has anyone else thought about doing this, or have a cheaper price on a manufactured unit?

OLE BLUE,

Why are you considering bed mounted spare tire carriers?

Cool

wjt,
CCLA is right there's no way a 35x12.50 is fitting in the stock location. Evidently you did not read my signature of things to come. I will be lifting my truck and this is the minimum size tire I would run. I also have a Borla cat-back installed that has two rear exiting pipes. I need to have a way of carring the spare other than throwing it in the back and letting it grow legs. Again anyone else find a decently priced unit, or decide they are too expensive and make your own?

Wink

Oh, now I understand. Thanks, sometimes I forget to think "outside of the box".

Sorry, can't recall seeing a retail spare tire carrier. Your idea of fabricating one seems to be the best choice, at least economically.
