Let's see a paper filter so we have something to compare to.

Hmmm, is that a hole in the actual gauze filter medium? With or without filter oil? I too would like to see what a paper or foam filter looks like at a similar magnification.

yhea... we really have no clue what to compare this too...

I mean, the last time I was looking at a paper filter under 88X magnificiation....

msparks, I agree that this does make you wonder a bit. You have to agree with the others though. Without a comparison, we can't know for sure that this is really that unusual.

The K&N filters are being used in all sorts of circles. You see them on race cars and bikes and air compressors. There has to be a benefit of some kind.

If there is actually a problem with the K&N filter we will find out soon enough. If that's the case then it's back to paper we go, untill the next great invention arrives.

That might be a pretty big gap in the filter, but idnt that where the oil is supposed to go.

you are 100% percent correct. Nothing to compare it too. This is not my picture, as I only found it on the net somewhere.

Anyhow, just a little something to make you think. I wonder about it myself.


Though there are comparisons to micron sizes on that picture, so that would at least give you a guage. For a reference the human eye can only physically see down to around 60-80 microns, and a human hair averages about 100 microns.

K&N Filters...
 

Personally, I think oil doesn't belong in an air intake, filter oil or otherwise. I think the drier the filter the better, if the stock airflow isn't as good, so be it...it's a tradeoff.

Man, looks like a bowling ball can fit through that passage! I think K&N says your suppose to stop using a damaged element. Also, I think your suppose to oil it first ( red stuff). Could be wrong, though. WOW






Interesting fact: People use K&N filters for off roading too with no problem???

I like mine, but I'm a city driver...no dirt/dust (except for the road grime etc).

I've used K&N's in everything for 13 years, and will continue to do so. Never had a problem except from a ruined MAF from over-oiling.

Will someone just invent a true oil bath system (like the old days) for our trucks!!! .......lol!!!

The picture appears to show ONE layer of un-oiled filter material.

The K&N is going to have MANY layers of material, and the particles will have to zig-zag their way through all the holes without bumping in to an oil soaked fiber.

In the photo, the depth of field is so shallow that you can't see if there are other filter fibers directly behind.

FWIW, I recently let my K&N go 30,000 miles between cleanings and it was FILTHY with dirt, to the point mileage and high rpm power were effected. No visible dust at all got past the filter.
