4:10 with the current 17" wheels will really eat some gas won't it? Anyone have any idea what kind of miledge that would give?

Question

I think the one after 4.10 for the Ford is 4.56. But, won't that kill me on the highway and with MPG. Also, I think bumping up that much requires some extensive rear end work so you don't tear the truck apart.

I was wondering if I would actually get better gas miledge and performance changing to 3:73 because as it is now, the only time I can affectivly use the OD is when I am on the flat hwy.
I'm in exactly the same situation. OD is all but useless except on the flat. I don't think there's anything "wrong" with our trucks, we simply should have had the 3.73 gears from the factory.

The cost of going from 3.55 to 3.73 is prohibitive unless you can do the swap yourself. I've read in a number of off-road magazines that gas mileage can IMPROVE with a shorter gear. In our case we may find that we can keep the OD on thereby lowering rpm and using less fuel.

I can do the swap with my fathers help.
I think it would be a definate benefit, especially if I go to a larger diameter wheel.

gah:

The truck is bone stock.

The 7700 series came with 3.73 (for those who don't know what a 7700 series is -- the F-250 LD became the F-150 7700 in 2000 -- my suspicion is that it was to bolster the sales figures for the F-150).

I think that Y2K has hit the nail on the head. The 3.73 gears are very well matched to the 5.4L and the improvement is probably greater than the small percentage change would indicate. If I keep my truck and don't buy an F-350 this year, I will definitely be doing a 4.10 swap.

Cool

Just a thought here but Jwrape, what if you put a K&N Filter on the front end. I had problems with the truck shifting out of OD going up small hills and as soon as I put the K&N FIPK on, the shifting quit. The truck now breaths easier which allows it to make more power. This was my first mod. which I have had for a long time and I have hauled a load of wood before and after putting it on. Made a world of difference on my truck with just the filter. Might be cheaper and less time consuming then changing your rear end. Just a thought though.

Thumbs up

I have 4.6 with 3.08 gears and a 5 speed and have no problem climbing anything or beating most you just pick the gear you need and gas milage is 19-21.5 on the highway?. As for OD isn't that the gear that is used for just mosieing along and not trying to pull a load. If you are pulling a heavy load i would not even think of using O/D
