Unhappy 1999 5.4L Engine Shutoff???

I have a 1999 5.4L Engine Shutoff. Randomly I will turn on the engine and it will just shut off. I will have to hold the revs high for 2-3 minutes before it will idle normally and act normal. Today I had the same problem except it didn't ever clear and on my 5 minute drive home when I arrived in the driveway it was still having the same problem except it was just randomly idling somewhere in the 400 to 700 rpm range. Usually I have to hold it at 1000 or above to keep it running. I checked the oil pressure and it is perfect. Any help would be appreciated since I have a limited knowledge of engines and it is 1500 miles over warranty.

Question

Could this be caused by the short trips. Moisture build up? not being able to burn off cause the engine not reaching normal operating temps? not sure, just a guess.

Not caused by short trips. I know for a fact that the engine gets to normal temperature almost everytime I drive. I was also wondering if the problem could be the alternater. This problem is occuring more and more frequently and I noticed today while looking under the hood that the alternater is acting wierd. I still need to do some more research.

Sounds just like a problem I had with my old Ranger. Turned out to be the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). It was intermittent and the only way I found out what it was with a code scanner. I would check for computer codes.

MINE DID THAT-- CHECK THE 2 HOSES THAT GO INTO THE THROTTLE BODY IF YOU HAVE A VAC LEAK IT WILL NOT IDLE RIGHT.
