Was just wondering.Flareside or Fleetside??Why and Why not???
I was just wanting to know why you all chose youre particular truck style?I have 2000 Flareside and I love it.Oh yeah its a SuperCab.Its just perfect.A SuperCrew is too big and Regular Cab is to small unless its a lightining.As I see there are more Fleetside than Flareside owners.I was just wondering why??????????

I think most owners cant justify paying more money for a smaller bed. I got the flareside because of the looks, mainly.

My first new style Ford truck was a Styleside. I told my wife anywone would have to have a screw loose to buy a Flairside when it cost more and was smaller. Who would do that???
Yeah right: Everytime I passed one of those damm Flairsides I was sorry I didn't get one! (They just looked too cool and I didn't need the extra space, rarely used the truck to haul and there has never been a time everything I did haul wouldn't have fit in the Flairside.) I got the Flareside because it looks better then the stylesides. I don't really haul anything so bed space doesn't really matter.

I think the general philosophy has been captured in the previous posts. Bottom line is that it is form vs function: - Form: Most people would agree that the Flareside looks better. - Function: It cannot haul as much stuff. I have the Styleside mostly because I wanted the extra room (and the difference in looks wasn't a large enough differentiator for me to go the other way). There are some people that prefer the standard look of the Fleetside as well (more of a traditional pickup look), however, my reason was mostly due to practicality. If I had the choice, I would choose Flareside. I think they are MUCH better looking. Plus, I don't need the extra 6 inches of bed space: I never haul anything.

Pre-1997 you would never have caught me with a Flareside truck. Don't get me wrong, they didn't look to bad, but the box in all honesty was not only a short, but narrow. Obviously the new flaresides are still narrower, but are probably a good foot wider than previously. Normally I'm able to hall whatever I need to hall, which normally isn't much because I have more than 1 truck. But personally I just love the way it looks. I have a styleside and wish I had the step that you guys have with your flaresides. My F-150 is a 4x4 with the ORP, so reaching anything at the front of bed is a pain, that step sure would help. Also, it's my understanding that the flareside bed is all composite ... is that correct?

sorry guys i think the flaresides are ugly--course i'm old and senile too. like the extra bed room on styleside. i still need more room to haul stuff. oh well preferences( or was that sex) makes the world go around.

Can't beat the style of the Flareside and the room you lose in the bed is negligible <sp>. If you haul a truckload of feathers around I could see needing the extra room for a styleside but, in most cases you will exceed the weight limitations before you run out of room.

Styleside here because of the bed room. You CAN max out the space without maxing out the payload when part of your load is an ATV! With a flareside, there wasn't room for much else, unless it would fit underneath the ATV, but the styleside does give you a little more room, although sometimes it STILL isn't enough! https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif

The flare sides have a steel bed, and steel sides on the inside, but the outer fenders (the curvy molded pieces with the steps) are fiberglass. They couldn't get the steel to consistently form that shape with the deep draw where the steps go without getting too thin, so they made it out of fiberglass instead. I also believe there is a marginal weight savings on the flareside bed assembly compared to the fleet-side, which would explain it's use on the lightnings.
I bought mine for looks. I occasionally throw some luggage or camping gear in the bed, but for the heavy or messy hauling I use my dad's utility trailer. You can fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the bed with the tailgate down, but then it might get dirty. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif -Joe- |
