5.4 - 4.6: How do you tell difference?

How can I tell the difference between the 5.4 and the 4.6 engine ? Are there numbers somewhere on the engine ? Thanks, I had a dream last night I had the wrong engine and just have to know for sure !!!

bambino 03-07-2001 01:44 PM

you can look at the diff too, the larger is only avail with the 5.4.

But if you were having a nightmare, i can see why you would want to check it out!

I will try an help you barngoddess.
Now tell me, in this dream were you shifting gears and working a clutch? If so, then that would be a 4.6 as the 5.4 only comes with an Auto. Of course, it you dreamed you were driving an Auto then it may have been either so let's move on. Many people don't know this but, there is a Fifty Dollar Bill taped to the back of the 5.4L. (that is the end opposite of where the fan is) All you have to do is reach back there and get it. If it's there you may have a 5.4L or it may mean that your truck was built by an unscrupulous assembly plant worker so let's move on.

Mine has a big red "5.4" on a plastic cover over the engine. I guess that doesn't actually mean that it is one.

LMMFAO@Raoul!!

You know, this might be something for the boys that investigated the radiator thing to look into......
What if there was some sort of conspiracy to substitute the 4.6 in place of the 5.4????
Assy line runs out of 5.4's... Supervisor says screw it! Put in 4.6's and take some 5.4 labels and stick them on there, they will nevere know the difference!
MWAHAHAHAHHAHAHA....

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.....

<Supervisor looking around with evil gleam in his eye...>

There is a decal under the hood that shows emission data and hose location. There is a sticker one the driver's side valve cover.

barngoddess,

What year is your truck? 1997-98-99 look for spark plug wires. If you see them you have a 4.6. You could check the 8 didgit of the VIN "L" should mean you have a 5.4.

mash the gas to the floor while in go gear and see what happens. if it lights the tires up then it has the 5.4l...........if it just sits there and says "what?" then it has the 4.6l......

Otter, are you implying that a 4.6l can't light the tires up?
Bone stock 4.6l auto and I never have a problem laying some stripes (two with the ls rear).==========

Otterbob
I am sorry to say this, but so for there is two 5.4 4x4's under this somewhat stock 4.6's belt. But i guess that is a common thought that just because your engine is bigger you are faster.Anyways Just on here to provide some laughs.

Hey aggie you said you beat to 5.4L 4x4s. I take it you have 4x2 so less weight. Bigger is better aggie. The 4.6L is a great engine. Test drove one before I test drove 5.4L. I felt a big difference in power in 5.4L not to say the 4.6L isn't powerful. Remember there is no replacement for displacement. Oh yeah do you have 5 speed?

Oppps...wrong tread... I am looking for advance mental disorders..you know, like dreaming that Ford is building the trucks with Toyota engines.

But anyway, mine is a 5.4 and I am very happy for that.

s/crew 03-23-2001 10:14 AM

Who gives a rats a$$ whos truck is faster, the 4.6 or the 5.4. Who cares? But you with the 4.6 that said you out ran the 5.4 4X4, why don't you grab a chain?

(Typical AGGIE) GO LONGHORNS!!!!

uga1988 03-23-2001 10:16 PM

I drove both before I bought. I step on the gas to make me smile as the gas needle moves to the left. Love my 5.4.

Bubbadewsky 03-24-2001 05:25 AM

I also had a dream. I dreamed that I have the correct radiator and guess what. This dream may come true. In a 2001 Silverado.

The 4.6L engine has an aluminum upper intake manifold. The 5.4L engine has a plastic intake. Also, there should be a sticker on the driver's side valve cover that has the engine serial number, type and displacement - 54 or 46. You might need a flashlight to read it. Good luck.

Anyone know of a good hand cleaner? I've got grease really embedded in my hands from looking for that $50 bill..

Gasp!! I didn't know that! I have Calif 5.4 Auto 4x4. I'd "kill" for a stick. I'd even take the 280... er, 4.6! Even more, for a 7700.

Roadie 03-28-2022 09:53 AM

The manual trans couldn't handle the torque of a 5.4.
