Angry 2001 5.4 Blue Smoke

2001 SuperCrew with 5.4 - large cloud of blue smoke when I initially start the truck in the mornings. Only happens ocassionally and dealer tells me until he sees it happen don't worry about it. I am concerned it is the sign of a problem that will cost $$ after warranty is up. Truck has 24000 miles on it. First noticed the problem at about 16000 miles. Doesn't seem to burn enough oil to be noticeable between 4000 mile changes. Could this be related to the 1999 5.4 head gasket problem? Any thoughts welcome! -- JFK

I've seen my 98 4.6 do it every couple of months but not a big cloud or anything. Seems normal.

I'd worry at the low mileage you have though.

We had that problem running 5w-20. We put in 5w-30 at the next oil change, and hasnt happened since.

Sounds like worn valve seals/guides. Generally nothing of any concern but it is odd that you would be having that problem at that low mileage. Even my Chebby 350 with 171,000 miles doesnt smoke at all.

Try the 5w-30 oil like fast54Triton said, you could also check out that Valvoline Max Life oil. They claim it is supposed to recondition seals and such, dont know if it actually works but might be worth a try. Shouldnt hurt to give it a shot.

Good luck and let us know if you can stop it.

Unhappy

I have the 2001 supercrew. I just had my 4th visit to the dealer for extended crank and puff of smoke when it does start.
The first 2 times they said they couldn't duplicate the problem.
The third time I made a video tape of my engine and the smoking.
They kept the truck for 4 days and they said couldn't duplicate the problem. Finally they had a ford enginner come down to look at my truck, and after viewing the tape and examining the truck he said the smoking and not starting is normal.
They told me I don't drive far enough to work. Well, exusssseeee me for living close to work.
My lawyer doesn't think so.
I didn't know I had to ask for a non-smoking truck.

My case is in the court right now. Ford declined the buy back, so I had to take them to court.
I am waiting for a trial date.

Good luck
