Cylinder Heads?
Why would "5.4L V8" be stamped on my cylinder heads, when I have a 4.6L V8 engine? Are the 5.4L cylinder heads used on the 4.6L?

I don't know but that would make me wonder!?! Kinda weird.

I can check into it for you, give me a couple of days. I work at Romeo where the 4.6L are made. I work in maintenance so I really do not keep up on all the details. Is there a number on the white tag on the engine? It's probably on the valve cover??

5.4L heads on a 4.6L engine
30,000 kms ago my Dad had the engine replaced in his '97 F150 (it's mine now) anyway, when he picked it up from the dealer when it was finished they told him that Ford had shipped the new engine with 5.4L heads and not 4.6L's. They called Ford because they figured it was a mistake and they said No it wasn't a mistake and to go ahead with the install. Ford also said that any new replacement engine they are sending out they are doing so with 5.4L heads on them. This was in Feb last year. Hope this helps

The cylinder heads are the same for the 4.6L and 5.4L engines. In addition, the left and the right heads are identical. There is only one part number for the cylinder head, whether 4.6L or 5.4L, or left or right.
As you probably know, the difference between the 4.6L and 5.4L is in the stroke. They share the same bore (and pistons), but because of the longer stroke, the 5.4L has a taller deck height. Sharing many of the same components brings the cost way down in a simple manner... |

same part number??
when i got a quote from fordpartsonline they gave me 2 different part numbers, one for right side, one for left side...:confused:

Sorry, I shouldn't have used the "same part number" comment.
The left and right cylinder heads are, in fact, the same component. The castings and the machined parts are identical. However, there are two separate part numbers because the left head will have the cup plugs and oil galley plugs on one end, and the right head will have them installed on the opposite end. Once the heads are installed, the plugs will be facing the back end of the engine. |
HI!... The "99" to current 5.4 heads are "PI" heads (POWER IMPROVED). The 4.6's have the old non "P.I" heads. They are not the same. Take a look :

I have a better Question ? I have a 98 F150 5.4L can I change to the new P.I. heads Or would It be better to have the old heads ported & polished with some larger valves? I can go for the extra 30 more horsepower... |
HI!... VENOM99 : I'm not sure. I would think that is how they got the extra 11H.P for the 2001 to current 4.6's. I've asked many freinds that work at the WINDSOR engine plant here, but keep getting conflicting info. Sorry I could'nt be more help.

We here at Romeo only make the 4.6 2V & 4.6 4V & 5.4 4V heads.
We do not make the 5.4 2V heads, so I do not have that info. My question would be combustion chamber size. The 5.4L has a longer stroke. To compensate for the longer stroke a larger combustion chamber would be probably be required to keep the compression down. That is unless the deck height compensated for this. |
HI!... NACHO : Yes you can bolt on the "99" to current 5.4 "P.I" heads on to your "98". The "99" to current MUSTANG GT heads are the same too. Aside from different cams. The 5.4 did'nt get it's extra 25H.P through just the heads for "99". They used a upgraded intake manifold, and cams. If you install "P.I" heads on your "98" you will have to get the "99" to current 5.4 intake manifold as well to go with the "P.I" heads. Your stock "98" 5.4 intake will not match the "99" to current "P.I" heads. The intake ports are different. You can see the pics above or look in my gallery. Hope this helps you out.
