When to change Oil the first time.

I just bought a new truck, and I want to switch to synthetic. I'm just partial to it. Anyway, Ive heard that you should weight about 10,000 miles before going synthetic. Something about letting the rings and everything seat. I don't believe this but was looking for more input. If that was true, why would some cars cove from the factory with synthetic oil.

Thanks,

Rick

Putting synthetic in the 1st time

I had a '95 F150 4x4 with the 4.9 inline 6. I put castrol Syntec in after @ 1100 mi. After 5 and a half years and 67,000 mi, the truck still ran like new. It never blew smoke, the mileage stayed the same, had the same power, and the internals NEVER had a problem. I've been told to use a regular oil for the first change at 1000mi and then at 4000mi, switch to synthetic. I now have a 2001 F250 4x4 with the 5.4 V8 And I did the same thing as with my '95. Now at 13000mi, not a single problem(knock on wood). I would also suggest putting Mobil 1 synthetic in your trans. and axle(s) when those maintenance intervals arrive. Just my 2 cents - Good luck with your new truck!

Thumbs up

I just bought a 02 S/C Fx4. The recommended oil is 5w-20. To my knowledge, this is a synthetic blend oil.

I performed my first oil change at 1000. I bought Ford branded 5w-20 at Walmart for $1.77 qt, and a motocraft 820s filter. Inasmuch as this is a synthetic blend, I am going to use a 5000 mile change interval.

My .02 cents on seating rings.... With todays plasma moly rings, seating is not usually a problem, unlike the cast rings of yesterday. My guess is that somewhere between 500 and 1000 miles the rings should have had ample time to seat properly.

A word of caution...do not mix a pure synthetic engine oil with a dino oil (non-synthetic). I have personally seen how these two do not mix. However I have succesfully switched from a dino oil to a synthetic blend without a problem.

I hope this helps.
