What's the latest on piston slap?
Hello gang.
I just bought a used '99 F150 XLT with 30,000 miles. Black 4X2 SuperCab; 5.4L; Trailer Tow. Not much else in options. Still about 1.5 years and 6000 miles left on the warranty. No door cracks. Coolest morning today since I bought the thing, about 68 degrees F. Clearly heard a sound just off idle when cold, at about 1200-1500 RPM that sounded like a diesel sound. It is not there on warmer mornings or after it's warmed up. Lots of posts here go back a couple of years, but no relatively new posts dealing with this issue. Will the dealer replace the motor with a new '99, or an new '00, or a rebuid? Will I have to "fight" with the dealer, or is this so well known and common that I just need to make an appointment and drop it off? Sorry, can't help you on that, but bein' this close I thought I'd tell ya mine's running terrible today, too. Maybe it's the weather. Just looking for some ideas here to replace stuff this weekend.

Well, I'm semi-close too, and I was runnin' great this morning, but the clutch was a little "touchy" as well.

I had heard through negotiating with my (soon to be former) dealer that Ford has decided that the piston slap problem is not that much of a problem after all, and that instead of replacing engines, they are giving customers extended power train warranties. Take this with a grain of salt though, because my dealership has lied to me so much these past few months, that I don't believe anything they say. I've had several phone calls with who is suppose to be the regional Ford service rep, and after what I've experienced from this dealer, I even question whether that rep is who they claim to be. I hope to know more sometime next week. If you've heard of this change in Ford's policy, please post a reply.

Does not matter if your not the original owner! I am the second owner of my 98 Expedition. I bought an extended warranty THANK GOD! I had the 5.4 replaced at 50K...No questions what so ever! Cost me a total of $50 for the deductable.

My recommendation to you is, if you plan on keeping your truck for at least a few years, it is in your best interest to get an extended warranty. The warranty at 30,000 miles usually costs approximately $1,400.00 to $1,800.00 which the dealer usually makes about 800.00 to 1,000.00 on it. You can negotiate your warranty. Also, there are still plenty of engines out there that still have the piston slap (mine being one of them)!! Bugman. |
well lads, I dunno about you, but I just got a new engine.
7 weeks in the shop. had the truck for 1 year now, it's been out of commission for 3 months, however. after 12 months of working out the bugs......I finally have a running truck. lol mind you, my rad is still leakin out the bottom. o well. can't expect too much from an automobile company that places 33/35 on customer satisfaction.
