ask your local Ford dealer to run the VIN number and they will tell you. If there is a recall they will fix it for free.

Try this link for NHTSA recalls (1997 FORD F-150s:

My 97 f150 had a leak at the timing cover and after i go it fixed, the next day i got the recall. This recall is very important!! you should get this done as soon as possible or there is a great possibility of motor damage due to antifreeze in the oil.(if it is leaking) The repair should only take a few hours and they will also change your oil at that time. A good place to look for recall's is http//www.ford.com you can put your vin number in and it will give you the recall's for you truck. Good luck....

thanks for the information ......

Yes be sure and get it done even if you don't see the leak! It will start sooner or later. Mine had been leaking for a couple of months - I thought it was the tranny because I had just had it serviced and assumed (I stress the ASS) it was trans fluid and the trans shop spotted the antifreeze leak while they were looking for the tranny leak!
When you make arrangements to have it fixed make sure that they have the parts- both the gasket and the cover! Mine needed the cover also. It was on factory backorder & it took a week to get it in after they had it apart!! Luckily they only charged me for 1 days rental- they ate the other 8 days(without argument) I have a good FOrd dealer unlike many of you! They are still family owned! Quite a rarity I guess according to many of the posts I have read here. It is an important fix so get it done without delay- |
I had mine fixed 20,000 miles ago. It was barely out of warranty, so the dealer let me pay a $75 deductible. Should I get the recall performed or try getting my $75 back?

If you have paid for a repair that is later covered by a recall or owner notification program, then you can be reimbursed for any cost incured for the repair. I have only done one of the front cover recalls, and they suck. The reason the covers are replaced on some of the vehicles is that they are breaking. The covers break on removal due to corrosion or the silicone at the oil pan. Ford has issued an updated service procedure for front cover removal to lessen the chance of them breaking. As of right know the covers are on national backorder.

Take a look on the Ford web site at http://www.ownerconnection.com/. You can register you truck with it's VIN number. If there is a recall that your truck has not had ,it is displayed.

Thanks fordfixer. Do you know the reason for the recall? I am just worried thath they may have fixed it (a year ago) with the same faulty part or something.

The coolent leak is a ONP (Owner Notification Program) and not a Recall. The difference is the US Govt does the Recall and ONP is done by Ford so they don't have to do a "offical" recall. I have a message into Ford to see if my 97 4.2 with 59k qualifies.

Just took the 97 F150 XL/SC to the Ford dealer to have the timing cover fixed (ONP 22B29). I emailed Ford via the Ford web site and asked if my truck was cover under any recalls or ONPs. Got a note back with the PCV valve one but no ONP's. I then sent a note back asking what 22B29 fixed and the reply was to take it to my Ford dealer. The service manager knew all about it and had "lots". The tech was just finishing one and showed me the paper work. He said they replace the cover gasket, change the oil, filter and anitfreeze.

Mine got fixed 2/22/00.

I took my 97 Ford F150 in last Wednesday 2/23/00, they fixed the timing chain cover problem, but it is still leaking anti-freeze though. Even though I see no leaking it is still leaking someplace. I'm taking it back today hopefully they get it fixed this time. I've gone through 2 gallons of anti-freeze in 2 weeks time. It started losing anti-freeze about 3 weeks ago.

Has any of the dealers given any of you guys any hassel about the timing cover seal fix. Mine said that my truck was not applicable to the recall. Mine is a '97 4.2L
