major problem

FIRST OF ALL, I AM A FORD MAN.BUT IN THE MOMENT OF WEAKNESS I BOUGHT AN 84 DODGE FULL SIZE TO DRIVE TO WORK. CANNT GET THE 150 TO DIRTY AND ALL. ANYWAY THIS MORNING THE TRUCK BACKFIRED REALLY LOUD THROUGH THE CARB WHEN I STARTED IT. IT DIDNT SEEM TO HAVE THE POWER ON THE WAY TO WORK[360 FOUR BARRELL]. I THOUGHT THAT THE CATYLETIC CONVERTOR FINALLY BIT THE DIRT. ON THE WAY HOME OIL STARTED GUSHING FROM BEHIND THE CARB. I LOST A QUART IN ABOUT A TWO MILE STRETCH. WHAT COULD IT BE? STILL KNOW PICK UP POWER BUT THE TRANNY SHIFTED FINE. SOMEBODY HELP!

Don't know about the oil leak, but a backfire through the carb usually means a timing problem, like the intake valve still open during detonation. Might be the timing chain slipped. Could also account for lack of power.

Describe where the oil is gushing from, is it coming from inside the carbuerator or somewhere else? Is it possible that the combustion chamber is blowing it up through the carbuerator?

I had a beautiful '66 Plymouth Sport Fury Convertible that gushed oil like that. Turned out to be the 'oil sending unit'. I remember the part was cheap enough but, no way to get one on a Sunday.

Post Carb Backfire

When your carb backfired it made pressure in your intake manifold instead of vacuum. Probably some hose or tube intended to ventilate the engine valley under the intake manifold or some gasket was blown out by this pressure causing the oil loss you're experiencing.

I had the same happen to me and after the carb backfired the truck ran rough and I no longer had power brakes! A quick inspection revealed that the force of the backfire was strong enough to knock the vacuum line off the power booster for the master cylinder.

You have to remove your air filter assembly and look around for the source of the oil leak. You might have to use an inspection mirror to see back around the firewall and such.

Good luck, let us know how things turn out for you.

Question

Just a thought, but you may want to check the PCV valve to make sure it's not clogged and/or still hooked up. It usually connects to a valve cover and the bottom of the carb.

The same thing happened to me once in my old 67 F100 360 4barrel. Blew the intake gasket & various hoses. No oil leaks but I was told that the carb caused the backfire. New gasket and carb and all was well again.

Aahh crap! Sorry bout that. Makes you think about guys that run 10Lbs. of boost through their intakes. In your case you might have had 30Lbs. or more for that instant when your carb farted.

Good luck Footwart, hope you get your baby back together soon.
