Engine Timing Problems

Hello my fellow Ford enthusiasts, I recently bought a 2006 Fx4 Supercab F 150. It has the 5.4, 3 valve under the hood, the guy I bought it from posted it in Facebook with pics and simply stated something is wrong with the motor and he had no idea what it was. The truck only has 120k miles on it and is very clean and looks real sharpe. So the truck is dropped off at my house and I hit the key and the starter drags like an old square body chevy. But my main issue was the horrible rattle when you first start it up..and the ole 7.3 sound it makes.. I have done my research on the dreaded. 5.4, 3 valve engines.. Im thinking a complete timing job..but first I bought 2 new OEM Ford VCT Solenoids and changed them, it was running rough before I installed the new VCT's..but now..it is absolutely rough and drinking gas bad.. Dont want to idle when I come to a stop! When it hits overdrive..it shakes and.shimmys so bad I have.to take it out of OD. im sure its bad phasers the way its sounding after watm up.my main question and concern is.. Purchasing new phasers, seems No aftermarket phasers seem to hold up any time at all, new Ford Phasers are like $300 a piece which is isnt bad if you like piece of mind..and I really do!! Is there anywhere I can buy new Ford phasers cheaper than a dealer. Any help is appreciated, I did buy a compete kit from Dales Super Store in Fla. The kit I ordered was from Spool Werks, however when it arrived the other day I got a box from Amazon with what looked like the Dollar General version of a timing kit!! So my first thought was, Amazon sells this same kit for like $99, I paid...WAY WAY more than $99 for the kit I purchased from the Fla. Truck and Jeep parts supplier. Im not in anyway purposely putting this company down because upon contacting them they immediately contacted Spool Werks to notify them and then contacted me to see if I wanted to keep the kit at a discounted price or return it... I chose to return, the parts were all scattered in the box and the tensioners were plastic. The kit may be a good kit but im just weary of putting substandard parts on my truck. I absolutely love the truck, it looks very sharp, it has a new set of halo headlamps with amber LED running lights. A single Magnaow muffler and.pipe with a large tip and it sounds really good, its the knock and tick from the.phasers that sound bad.. The timing is all over the place and its running really ragged right now..im just waiting on my new Melling high volume oil pump to arrive and then its on.. But if anyone has that ace in the hole where I can get that good deal on a set of genuine Ford phasers..Any help is appreciated.I will post an after repair post to let every one know how it turns out.

Watch this 4 part video on YouTube. Click on Show More to see the complete parts list with purchase links, plus links for part 2 and 3, and oil pump replacement. Except for the oil pump, use only Motorcraft parts. I know, they ain't cheap, but aftermarket timing components are junk.
