5.4 3 valve running rough

I have a 2004 f150 5.4 3 valve running rough soon as you start it up ,was driving it home the other night almost before I turned in my house it lost power wouldn’t hardly get over 30 parked it ,tried to crank it the next day still running rough ,codes I have pulled with scanner are p0022,p0340,p2195 I got some vct solenoids Ford oem going to replace them this weekend,I replaced the cam position senor couple weeks back should I change them again. So is there anything else that would make it run rough cold or hot ?

The VCT solenoids will likely cause this.

Others will chime in, as this is a common issue with the 3v 5.4l. We got a good group on here that is quite familiar with this.

Since you are going this far, I recommend replacing your stock pump with a Melling M360HV oil pump. It will make the replacement VCT components not have issues later down the road.

I can’t get th seal to move at all any suggestions

First VCT replacement on my 2004 5.4l, I had to destroy the seal to get it out. Used a screwdriver / hammer to crush the edge inward, then got a'hold of it with vice grips. I promise you will want new ones anyway.

------EDIT:

BTW, you didn't mention mileage. I hope VCTs do some good. But if you have expected mileage on an '04 model, and if you have had any other symptoms (misfires, startup rattle, diesel sound), don't be surprised if it's time for a full Phaser / timing chain job. Hope I'm wrong for now.

Timing chain guide has come off and logged in between the valve cover and the cam phaser vct screen and a little metal shavings on it I guess I need to tearing it apart to do a timing job

Yep - VCT's, phasers, chains, tensioners and guides, and oil pump.

Do I have to take the cam followers out like I seen in some videos

glc 01-02-2019 10:41 PM

I don't see why you would have to unless you are removing the camshaft. You do need something to lock the cams in place, makes it a lot easier to retime it..

What would I use to hold it in place ,I have seen videos of people using vice grips and do I have to replace the phasers only problem I noticed before was a little hesitation on acceleration

ptmccray70 01-04-2019 08:17 AM

What if I just reused mine and put phaser lockout kit in it

Change the phasers and use only Ford parts.

If I wanted to check for bent valves how would I check that without pulling the head
