Way to tell what year my reman engine is?
 

I did an engine swap with a (new) reman 5.4. My truck is an '01. I know the engine is at least an 05 but would like to know for sure if there is a way to verify what year it is. Thanks.

Like I said in your other thread, you do not have a coolant temp sensor. I don't think the 5.4 ever had one, if it did, it was before 2000. If you have an 05 or newer 5.4 2 valve, it's out of a van. Trucks went to 3 valve in 04.

Just because you don't have a coolant temp sensor does not mean it's an 05 or newer.

I totally get what you stated. I am ok with the cylinder head sensor. The reason I am trying to identify the year of the engine is when I need to do additional maintenance I know what year parts to ask for. Also the
reference to at least being a 2005 is because my repair manual stated as such. It could even be a newer engine than that. Just trying to validate. Otherwise all else is ok.

You should be able to use 2001 parts. There's very little difference from 1999 to 2003, and if it's working fine in a 2001 truck it's been properly adapted.

It's certainly not a 2005 or newer F-150 engine, last year of the 2 valve 5.4 in a F-150 was 2003 and 2004 Heritage model. The Super Duty and Expedition changed over in 2005.

I don't know where your repair manual is coming up with that. The only 2 valve 5.4's made in 2005 or later went into E-series vans.

1999 and later F-150's with 5.4 2 valve had PI (power improved) heads, as did Super Dutys and Expeditions. The vans never had PI. 97's and 98's were not PI.

So - if you think you have a 2005 or newer 5.4 2 valve, it came out of a van and did not have PI heads. Manifolds are not compatible between PI and non-PI.

I'm betting you have a PI that originally came out of a 99 to 03.
