codes?

As Roadie said, is it throwing codes?
Is everything hooked up where it's supposed to be? Vacuum leaks? |

Check the fuel pressure and also keep the gauge on it when it dies just to make sure you have pressure.

Clean the IAC.

If the overdrive light is flashing take it to a transmission shop and have it checked for transmission codes.

I would still check the fuel pressure. There is a regulator in the line too. Just to rule it out.

Torque convertor staying "locked" will cause the truck to die at idle.
It's like trying to leave a clutch engaged on a manual while sitting still |
How many miles on the engine? I've seen them stall like this when they get tired and the timing chain stretches and throws the valve timing off. I don't know if the computer might pick up on that or not but it usually affects the emissions. OTOH the computer could be compensating for the emissions. In the late 60s and early 70s engines, a timing chain was only good for about 60,000 miles.
PS a compression gauge may show it if there's a problem with the valve timing. A vacuum gauge will show it but a lot of other things could also cause an abnormal Vac Gage reading. I would strongly suggest a compression check on all cylinders just to be sure that the pistons and pistons and valves (not valve timing) are physically ok. |
