Stalls out at idle or when stopping
Hi. Help! 1990 automatic 4wd xlt lariat just started stalling out at idle, or when I come to a stop. I have to put it in neutral and rev it up to keep it from stalling when I come to a stop.
It also sometimes revs itself up intermittently (like pulsates) all on its own, then will go long periods without doing it at all. It is also hard to start after it has been driven and then sits for a few minutes - when it's cold it stats right up! Any ideas what it could be? The truck is a beater but I don't have much money and really need to keep it for hay and to get out of my dirt road on occasion. Thanks in advance for any advice! |
For the idle, possibly the idle air controller - for the hard hot starting, possibly leaky fuel injectors.

I've seen the stalling when coming to a stop problem, be caused by a bad Torque Converter. Something to think about.

Had a '91 with a 302...did the exact same thing... Never could figure it out.

Are there any codes?

So I was feeling a little uneasy about powertrain products, so I ran that by my mechanic and asked about a Ford long block. He said he has successfully used PP several times, and never had a failure. He did say 2 of the motors he did had a bad seal somewhere and leaked, but that PP took care of it without any issue.
And he did confirm to me that it will have a 1 million mile part warranty and a 7 year labor warranty |
The egr stuck open might cause the idle problem. With a truck that age, the first thing I would do is a compression check. On the hard hot start, try putting the accelerator pedal on the floor. If it starts better, the engine is flooded.

Jimbo - I think you replied to the wrong thread.
Roadie - you just replied to a 5 year old post. |
