K&N oil filter is it good
 

I recently bought a K&N oil filter and wanted to know if anyone has used a k&N oil filter and if it works any better than motorcraft or should i just stick with motorcraft.

It's a good filter, though it may not be any better than MC. There are several real good ones that get the job done including Wix and Purolator.

The K&N oil filter is the same thing as a Mobil 1 filter with a nut on the end to make it easier to change. It's a high quality filter, better than a MC, Wix, or Purolator. Is it worth the 12 bucks? Questionable unless you are using synthetic oil and going for extended drain intervals.

Per Champion Labs, the maker of both the Mobil One synthetic filter and K&N filter, They use the same glass mat for the filter media. However, they do have different specs. The M1 filter is rated at 50% efficiency at 10 microns single pass, the K&N is 50% at 20 microns single pass. So are they any good? Not in my book. The biggest issue is the glass media becomes saturated with crap and is quick to go into by-pass which means zero oil is being filtered. While a Motorcraft filter won't filter out particulates at 3-4-5 microns, the synthetics will, meaning yes, they filter more crap out but fill quickly with particulates that are pretty much meaningless to your engine. Very few engines need that small of filtration. Champion Labs states that these filters work great to 5000 miles under normal driving conditions- no farther. A much better value IF a synthetic media is wanted would be the Pure One. It uses a glass media but it's rated at 99.9% at 20 microns and will flow 3 times more oil than the K&N at 11 GPM per Purolator.The cheapo Motorcraft filters at 97.5% at 10 microns single pass. If going for extended oil changes, there's only one designed for it-Amsoil Oil Filters. So chose wisely, grasshopper.
Factoid: It takes a 40 micron size particle to do damage to the engine. A micron is 1/1,000,000th of a meter.
