Need help on a crank no start issue
I have a 2010 4.6 f150 supercrew 4x4. Within the last month it has done the following about 4 times. It will start and run fine then randomly will crank but to start. You cannot hear the normal hum of the fp. Tried tapping on the tank with the mallet to no avail. Let it sit over night and it will usually start. Second to last time I had it towed to mechanics house and once unloaded off the tow truck it fired up and he could not get the "issue" to happen again. He found no codes showing any issues. Took the truck back and it ran fine for a week started just fine every day multiple times a day then all of a sudden wouldn't start again, let it set over night started up so I could get it home. Like an idiot I shut it off once home and went back an hour later and it wouldn't start and did not for 2 days straight. Had it towed again to mechanics house and once unloaded it starts fine and has for 2 days straight. Any advice please, this is about to make me lose my mind and set this thing on fire and collect the insurance. Lol. I'm not mechanical at all but don't feel like dropping $6-700 bucks on fuel pump and fp drivers module if there's something else I can do. Thanks in advance for any help

It's not hard to unbolt the FPDM and check it for corrosion. Reseating relays and fuses is pretty easy too.
|
Would the fpdm help explain the sporadic occurrences and the way it usually starts after being towed or sitting over night.
|
You never can tell. It's possible.
|
I guess I'm confused. I've looked for a fpdm for a 2010 model f150 online and they all show stopping at 2008. Does the 2010 have one or am I just not looking in the right places
|
Good question - maybe they are using something else to regulate the fuel pressure now? I do know that the fuel filter is INSIDE the tank.......
|
Does the 2010 have one It's probably still a dealer-only part. Call your dealer's Parts Dept with your VIN. |
I changed the fpdm and made sure all connections were good. Truck started fine for a day but then the no start issue happened again. Checked all the fuses and they are fine and the fuel pump relay is working. I'm at my wits end and don't want to pay the boys at the ford dealership the kings ransom they will demand. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

On my older cars, 2 of them, that did the same thing it turned out to be the ignition module. Electronic crap tends to work intermittently sometimes.

His truck doesn't have an "ignition module", those went out around twenty years ago. Everything is run by the PCM.
Anything we tell you is going to be a guess, especially with such incomplete information. |

First - the OP does not have 'an older car'. Second - if you distrust 'electronic crap' so vociferously, ye's best sell all yer trucks, as both are chock-full of same. As is yer house. Get a horse and buggy, or a bicycle and go live in a cave. Good grief - surrounded by Luddites  OP - best of luck - dealer IDS diags may be yer best recourse. It may be cheaper (and less stressful) than throwing parts at it at the end of the day. Regards; MGD |

Suggestions.....
Check ground strap on pcm Ignition mobilizer or keys....mark one side of Yer key... Try one side then flip it and try the other....sensor in column might have loose /broke connection Also check the fuel pump relay in the engine compartment junction box Worst cause Yer truck is running rich....clean the maf and throttle body....this should be done periodically as routine maintenance too |

If the symptom is a "crank but no start: .AND. he cannot hear the fuel pump run during it's priming cycle, he doesn't have an ignition problem, he has a "no fuel delivery" problem.
All his symptoms are consistent with a fuel pump on its last legs but none of the information provided is 100% definitive. Thanks for playing. |
