F150 4x4 4.6 need more power
 

I have a F150 4x4 4.6 trying to see what upgrades would be good for it I have 20s with 35s and my power sucks

no kidding, that setup totally defies common sense




time for some 4.88 gears

The cheapest way to get more power would be to trade in that truck and buy one that has a big enough engine for the mods you have/obviously want.

right now, you probably don't even know what gears your truck is equipped with


adding the larger tires to an already undergeared / underpowered truck made things worse, the 4.88 gears will save your transmission and make the truck somewhat driveable

Josh, when you went to larger tires you indirectly changed the gearing in the truck. It's like you moved all of the gears more towards overdrive. The gear ratio in the axle is the number of turns the driveshaft makes per one wheel revolution. If you have the standard 3.55 gears, that means the driveshaft turns 3.55 times per one turn of the wheel. Going to 4.88 gears means it would have the engine running faster which equals more power to pull the truck. Kinda like the truck drives in first gear versus pulling in third gear. If you were to go back to 28" tires, the 4.88 gears would be too low and engine RPMs would be high for any given speed. You can't just put bigger tires on a vehicle without sacrificing something. In your case, you've sacrificed power and more importantly, stopping power. There are a number of states now that have outlawed the big tires. You can only go one size larger. The big tires have killed many a folks. If you're going to run them, know what you're doing first.

Well actually that setup may be smaller since I have 265R70/17 stock.

programmer. i just ordered a gryphon for my 4.6L. we'll see what it does but i hear good things. plus it will recal your speedo for your 35's. and like everyone else said gears. I have 33's with the 3.55 and it does alright but it definitely lacks some power. I would go 4.56 gears, thats what I am going with actually. I've been in 2 different 4.6L's with 35s and the 4.56 gears felt just right.

2nd. Considered 4.88's but doggonne it...everywhere I like to go requires a couple hours of highway driving. 4.56 gave me the best compromise. I run a canned tune, only 2 cats now, and a 3" cat back Flowmaster Super 10.

I sound fast all git out, but in reality, I'm just good enough. Feels good- good pull through the power band for me and my "get up to the mountains" mentality.

Simply67x what kind of RPM's are you running on the highway 65-70mph? just curious
