5.4 Dyno test
 

Thought you guys and gals might be interested in this. Took my Brand new 2000 F150 XLT 5.4 3.55LS reg cab short bed to the local Dynojet today. Mileage was 498. Truck is dead stock. The ambient temp was 74 degrees, barometer was 30.03 in.Hg. Truck was warm from running around town. Dyno figures were as follows HP RPM 3650 189.1, 3900 201.4, 4150 207.2, 4400 206.7, 4650 200.2. Torque was 272.1 at 3650, 271.3 @3900, 262.2 @4150, 246.7 @4400 and 226.1 @4650. Max horsepower on the graph was 208 HP @4200 RPM. Unfortunately the way the dyno runs were done it does not give an accurate portrayal of low rpm torque, maybe the operater can figure it out better next time. The truck shuts off at 4660 RPMs, which is 108 mph as measured by Dynojet. This is the speed limiter built into the Computer. Using the standard 25 reduction in drivetrain losses it calculates out to 277.2 horsepower at 4200 RPM. If you were to use a 20 percent reduction due to friction it would calculate out at 260 Horsepower even at 4200 RPM. Torque is harder to figure out but at 3650 it is putting out 362.8 Ft/lb's with the 25 percent friction loss. Calculating with a 20% friction loss it works out to 340.1 Ft/lbs. Since this engine is supposed to be 25 Lbs/Ft stronger at 2500 RPM than at 3500 that would put torque at 2500 at around 360 to 380 pounds of torque at 2500 RPM. The owner of the Dynojet was inpressed with the truck, he could tell by the way the truck spun the rollers up quick it was strong. This shop by the way handles mostly Chevys but they all liked fast cars and trucks. Saw a dyno run for a 96 Vette there, 383 stroker, 398 horses and 405 foot pounds and 557 HP and over 600 foot pounds on the bottle! And yes that was rear wheel!

Nice! 208hp to the rear wheel is real good. Ask the dyno owner if he knows what a 99
Shovie with the 5.3 and 4.8 dynos.

Thanks for the technical data! Nice to know these engines are performing as advertised. I haven't really stomped on mine yet, but I have just changed oil using Mobil 1, and will really get after it when I take my Chevy owning friend for a ride this weekend.

I'd bet the new Chevy 5.3 does not have a torque curve as long and flat as the 5.4 Triton.

Thanks for the technical data! Nice to know these engines are performing as advertised. I haven't really stomped on mine yet, but I have just changed oil using Mobil 1, and will really get after it when I take my Chevy owning friend for a ride this weekend.

I'd bet the new Chevy 5.3 does not have a torque curve as long and flat as the 5.4 Triton.

On another note on the only longish trip I have done so far with the trip, part interstate part back highways and some town driving the truck used 11 gallons of gas for 201 miles for 19MPG. Not bad! Hot Rod Six I have always been impressed by your truck, I believe I will be getting a superchip when I have a few more miles on the truck.

Those are real good numbers for the 5.4 , Is there a way you could post the graph or send it to me. I am real interested in seeing it.

If BrienK has the run saved on disc, you can download our "Run Viewer". This way you can check out various scenarios (hp vs trq, hp vs speed, etc...)

I think this list is great, and I'm looking to do a 99.5 Lightning clone, except 4x4. It will sport an intercooled positive disp. blower too!
