2002 5.4 mid to no throttle mis, no codes, chain guide?

Started to experience a mid range mis. No lights, checked with scanner, no codes. Truck sits alot and when driven is usually towing boat or RV. First thought was fuel issue, added fresh fuel and seafoam, no change. I have been told it could be broken/warn chain guide? I guess I will need to pull the cover and inspect. Anyone else experience this issue?

You thought right at first. I'd still consider it a fuel issue until you actually change the filter and check the fuel pressure. Have to rule those simple things out first IMO.

How many miles are on it?

Chain issues usually bring weird lack of power, and fuel trim codes, but that's usually means someone timed it incorrectly.

I'd look at plugs and cops first

the 2v rarely has timing issues. I'm with everyone else. Fuel pressure check followed by a full on tune up. What you really need is a scanner that shows misfire counts. Snapon or dealer to pin point the exact cylinder. I really wouldnt even give the timing chain much consideration unless the engine gets totally abused or it has like 500 thousand miles on it.

Right, he said mid to no throttle. That really isn't a common COP issue. Unless he's referring to the OD test. Where the engine misses @ 45 mph right after the shift into Over Drive. That's usually the dead giveaway for a bad coil, but that's no throttle to mid load. Not backward, AFAIK lol.

Still, you should always rule out a fuel issue first IMO, - for a misfire issue.

Yea, a Snap-on scanner w/Mode 6, or cylinder history, - particularly,- misfire history.

An Android phone, a $5 app, and a $20 ebay OBDII adapter will pull the mode 6 misfire counts.

I found it I think? Its called Torque lite which is free and the torque Pro which is $5? Are these the correct ones? Seems pretty cool that it shows everything gauges or even something like Edge products would. Still would like some feedback before I buy or I might even try the free version first.

Yea, I've been ready to upgrade my phone, just been lazy about it. If this app works, I'll get the best phone for it. It would be worth it to me then lol.

Yes, that's how I recently diagnosed the misfires on my OBD1 V10.
