Engine swap

Well my 5.4 is starting to rattle upon startup so I know the cam phasers are starting to go out. So here is my question. Should I rebuild the top end of me 5.4 knowing the phaser will probably go out again or should I get me a carbureted 351 to put in it? Now if I do the 351 will my factory gauges and transition work with the swap?

What are you using for oil and oil filter? How many miles on it?

A carbed 351 swap is not practical at ALL.

I'm using the recommended motor craft 5-20 oil and filter. And it has 165,000 on it

If your phasers are starting to go bad, there's no need to rebuild the top of the engine. Just change the cam phasers and be done with it. They're not hard to change depending on your skill level.

The idea of an engine swap like you described was a joke, right? Anything is possible with enough time and money, but that would be a lot of work for a truck with far less power, reliability, and efficiency.

I got a 351i built for my fox body mustang. But there was an electrical fire on the inside so the car has been sitting dormant. But it dynos at 502 hp and 526 ft lb of torque. I was really thinking about puting that in it. Because wont the phasers keep going bad?

For what it's going to cost you to put a 351 in, you can build that 5.4 and lock the phasers.

since street legal isn't an option for you then go for it, you'll need new motor mounts, new transmission, new exhaust etc?

what transmission would you use?

so you plan on removing your stock cluster and using what for speedo?

clearly your wiring is sub-standard so I highly encourage you to have someone else perform this swap for your off road truck

The old engines have absolutely nothing in common with the Modulars. You could pick any engine a chevy a dodge old style motor and you would be faced with the same difficulties making it work. Not impossible but close. Not something any backyard wrench can do either. I have allot of experience swapping motors but that is not a project I'd consider doing. Way to technical for me..
