Persistent P0430 Code

Hi all!

Well for the past year, I keep getting a P0430 code...I reset it, then it comes back about every 3 months...until the past couple of weeks. It shows up with check engine light about every week or about 300 miles...

I know this means that the cat is probably bad on the drivers side...but I want to fix what is causing the code...ie fuel injector? Or plugs/coils...

My code reader gives freeze frame info...what can be determined from the info displayed?

stftrm1 7.8
ltftrm1 6.3
stftrm2 -2.3
ltftrm2 6.3

maf lb/m 1.01

o2s11 0.060
o2s12 0.195

stftrm21 -2.3

o2s21 0.750
o2s22 0.675

Any ideas from the ever wise here?

Aftermarket cats are not available here in Cali for the 05, so I am looking at a $ 2300 repair min if I go legal...I am also wondering if a 49 state cat were to make its way on to the truck would it affect anything?

Regards!!

PS 5.4l 3V, 4wd

It would be worth it to go pay the dealer to check the fuel injectors as per the letter:

https://www.f150online.com/forums/v8...ram-07m08.html

If you have injector issues, the new injector(s) and cat will be on the house unless you are over 120k miles.

I don't think you would pass a smog check without the right cat.

There *IS* a possibility your injectors and cats are fine, the code can also be caused by an exhaust leak.

I'm at almost 135k...the code started at about 124k, so I was already out of warranty for the injectors...

I did have one changed at 81k...my rt side head was fried along with cat... I still had to pay the $100 deductable on the warranty because the dealer refused to tie the 2 together...Injector was free, but the rest of the work went against the extended warranty...

Spark plugs were changed then, and I am almost ready for another set. Coils were changed in the last year (I had to do 2 at a time).

I intellectually refuse to pay $2300 for a cat...I am hoping that aftermarket cats become available after first of the year... I also don't want to throw a new cat on and ruin it because of a bad injector...I don't hear an exhaust leak?

I am not getting any other codes ie miss fire...

If I could, I would reset the code and trade it in...but that is not in the cards...

Regards!

New improved Motorcraft injectors are only $28.89 each at Rock Auto. You can test for leakage yourself - lift the fuel rail with the injectors still attached and prop it up, put paper towels under them, turn on the key, and look for drips.

I have same code on my 08 5.4, but as I understood it it says catalyst efficiency below threshold, bank 2...which is passenger side. It's one of three things; bad cat, exhaust leak, or faulty o2 sensor. Mine came up after a big cold deep puddle, still not sure what the issue is but I am almost sure mine is the sensor. I've checked for exhaust leaks and found none...haven't had any sputtering or hesitation from stuck injector, so I am hoping the cat isn't thrashed ( they're Maggie hi flows). That and my motor still runs smooth. That it runs at all tells me an injector prolly isn't stuck open which could hydro lock it. Anyhow, good luck, I know it can be aggravating having an intermittent code.

I guess the problem with the injectors is that it's an intermittent problem...

I do have the occasional hard start...crank it over and it seems flooded, wont start, then try again and it fires up... and sometimes get the low oil pressure message...

I have pulled the fuel rail in the past, and done the self test...I used Mc Donalds ketchup cups under the injectors, and there haven't been any leaks. I also have looked at the fuel rail pressure with my scanner to see if it drops off, and it hasn't...pretty steady around 42 psi if I remember correct...

I guess I will start changing injectors...probably will have to do like the coils...2 per paycheck...

I am hoping that the 05 F150 goes on the CARB list after the first of the year so I can get an aftermarket Cat...

So the code persists...was every 3-4 months, then every 300 miles or so...now about every 75 miles...

I spoke with Magnaflow today...they are hoping to have a converter approved by CARB sometime this year...

I am not liking having to buy a Ford Catalytic converter...I am going to check the injectors again... though, my fuel rail pressure when parked and key on stays steady at about 44.75psi...I would think that if there is a leaking injector, the pressure would fluctuate a bit...

I did uncouple the muffler to see if perhaps that is clogged...kinda like the sound...O2S11, O2S12, O2S21, and O2S22 levels are about the same as the freeze frame data...
