2005 5.4 (77,000+) misses on acceleration from dead stop or while moving. If I accelerate gradually it is ok. A few days ago I was cruising at 60 and floored it. It missed several times and felt like it was about to stall. Keeping the accelerator pressed through this, the engine gradually 'caught up' but then began to flash the CEL. I immediately ran a scan (while CEL was blinking) with scan gauge II and had no codes. I'm planning a plug change soon. Should I replace COP's as well?

Scan it once it stops blinking. At times it may take two occurrences to set DTC in the KAM.

Just cleaned MAF with CRC cleaner. Holy Cow! Could not reproduce the hesitation/missing issue! I almost didnt spray down the MAF because it looked clean.. but figured what the heck I have it out... glad I did.

Ford originally said the plugs were good for 100,000 miles but since have changed this to 60,000 miles because of the problem of the two piece plug breaking off. If I was you ,I would get them changed sooner than later with the mileage you have. Before doing this, make sure you have the "Lisle broken spark plug removal tool" part #65600, on hand. The dealer will rape you for a plug change on this engine! It will help to run a couple of tanks of gas through with Techron fuel system cleaner to break up some of the carbon around the plugs. Use Motorcraft SP515 plugs. Read up on the plug removal procedure in this forum before attemping the plug change. Good luck!

Not all dealers do. There are quite a few of them out there that are reasonable. My local dealer does it for $260 including 2 free extractions, further extractions at actual clock time. However, they highly recommend a BG job first, which is another 85 bucks. (This was 2 years ago, it may be a bit higher now as their labor rate has gone up from $80 to $85 an hour)
