2005 5.4 3v- replacing phasers, chains, tensioners, and guides
Hello all-
I am replacing the phasers on an 05 5.4 3v. While pulling valve covers, I Noticed alot of slop in the driver's side chain. Digging further, I removed the timing cover and found all kinds of "goodies". The passenger chain guide is completely gone- pieces everywhere, but can only find ~25% of it (so I know the oil pan is loaded). It is tight right now, but the timing cover has a TON of missing aluminum and the block is also scored. The driver's chain is extremely loose, the drivers tensioner is locked up as well. SO...
In addition to replacing phasers I am now going to replace the chains, tensioners, and guides.
My driver's cam sprocket appears to have jumped a tooth as the mark is at a different position than the passeners side. EVERYTHING says to paint the links (if you dont see gold or black links already... which I don't) but I 1- need to verify where the old chain SHOULD be and 2- am going to install NEW chains.
I have Googled the hell out of the web/youtube for a 2005 5.4 3v guide on NEW timing chain installation. This site is one of the best I have found but even here I have not located exactly what I am looking for.
Where can I find instructions on doing this "from scratch" using new chains? Again, I do not see any marks on old chains to see if I am where I need to be to start with. Also, my timing mark on the timing cover is essentially at 11 o'clock for the harmonic, 6 o'clock for the crank gear.
Thanks in advance!
Steve

Hello BlueJay, I have. Found 2v articles, and 3v phaser replacement. 2v cam sprockets are different, and the 3v article shows the chain wedge tool method which I am not using. I have searched using 5.4 3v timing chain, (same) chain replacement, just timing chain, etc. and am not finding what I am looking for yet.
Thanks,
Steve
Thanks,
Steve

I would save the aggrevation and find a different engine. With everything you have listed thats damaged including scored bores why are you even considering rebuilding this engine? All the metal that you say is in the oil pan has almost certainly blocked the oil pickup tube screen and starved the entire engine of oil. When a timing chain breaks like yours has about 99% of the time the cam is seized in the cyl head meaning the cam and head are basicly junk. Not only that but I would bet the piston domes are all damaged from impacting the valves when the engine went out of time from the broken chain. Unless I don't understand what your intentions are with this engine then pull it and find another you'll save yourself time and money. JMO

Dynotech- vehicle was actually running ok but down on power and ticking. Chain never broke, but the chain follower on the pass. side is GONE. Little chunks everywhere. Will have to clean oil pan as best I can (thru timing cover opening) to get big chunks out. I do have a concern about the aluminum the pump no doubt picked up but getting the oil pan off and checking is not in the cards right now.
