Well I have the dreaded 171 and 174 codes on my 02 5.4 here is a list of what I have checked/changed so far:

new plugs and cop's done in July 09
coolant flushed/refilled "
tranny " "
new MAF
new ox sensors
new EGR. solinoid and DFPE sensor
new fuel filter

what else am I missing for these codes?

Don't change the O2 sensors yet. They look like they are doing their job.

The most common cause for a lean code is a vacuum leak - and the most common vacuum leak is the PCV elbow behind the intake manifold.
I did try and find the elbow to see if it had a crack the other day but either wasnt lookin hard enough or i was havin a dumb moment and overlooked it but i couldnt find the elbow.

The guy at autozone said something like bad fuel filter, fuel line, or plug wires could throw the code also. changed or checked any of them??

Bigtruckguy, "I did try and find the elbow to see if it had a crack the other day but either wasnt lookin hard enough or i was havin a dumb moment and overlooked it but i couldnt find the elbow." You have to reach all the way back behind the intake manifold to get the tube/hose off and check to see if its cracked or not...Its behind the throttle body and down a little.....

Check the rubber grommet around the MAF sensor when I changed out the filter on my parents 01 I didn't put it back like it was supposed to and it threw the CEL

I changed:
4 o2 sensors
full tune up
The full pcv hose with new elvow
and that hose that goes from the throttle body it has a green clip

and all it was was the goment that was not closed down right

Personal experience...check one of two things BigTruckGuy. Vacuum leaks, and a thing that can really screw with your mind---leaky EGR valve. Really causes radical idling, almost like a MAF sensor. Then again, the MAF sensors are screwy, too. Take the K&N out, run a stock filter. I know if I take my air cleaner out while the truck is idling, it surges, but not as bad as you described.

Took my air filter apart and cleaned all the excess oil out, there was a ton. Tried to take the maf apart but the darn hex bolts had a stud in the middle that required a special tool i guess so i left it alone.

Got some tb cleaner started the truck and sprayed about 1/4 the can in there. Un did my battery cable and then hooked it all back up.

Did that saturday and my cel hasnt came back on since.

Not a good idea. The TB should be removed to clean it. The TB cleaner is rough on the spark plugs and cats.

The bit you need to pull the MAF is called a safety torx.

Saftey torx can be found at ur local lowes for under $10. If you do plan on going to a junkyard make sure u have them. Just bc u botched the head on the screws dosent mean u need a new maf tho. Get a stripped screw remover kit (lowes) and try to remove them first. U can always replace them with new screws lowes also should have the thread pattern that u will need as well as a more traditional Phillips head if u prefer.

might be easier to dit that way. could always borrow tools at lowes or autozone or oreileys also instead of having to buy them
