DTC P0442 Will it clear itself?
97 5.4 F-150
Fixed the fuel filler neck and the MIL went out. However the DTC is still in the PCM memory. Evap monitor not ready after a week of driving to work. Mode $06 scan indicates 2 fail PID's related to pressures rising in allotted time. Do I have to clear the DTC's to get rid of P0442 or did I not drive long enough or do I still have a leak? There was a pinhole in the filler neck. Cheers |
If you are still getting a P1000, you might as well clear the codes by disconnecting the battery and let it start over from scratch.

There is no need to mess with the battery connectors to reset the PCM.
Locate the little auxiliary fuse box back in the corner under the hood (see owner's manual) and pull the 5A fuse for 10 minutes. That will reset the PCM without screwing up your radio or clock. The EVAP monitor is the one that is the hardest to get to run. It can take days, weeks, or even months to execute. |

As a reminder, you have to have your scan tool with you and use it to do this.
Since the only real concern with unexecuted monitors is getting an emissions test certification, it's not a real problem otherwise. Most jurisdictions allow one or two incomplete monitors during OBDII-based e-tests, so there isn't a lot of pressure to get the monitor to pass or to execute. BUT the monitor has passed(all of them), the light is off, but the DTC is still in the code memory, now after 2 weeks of driving. I was wondering if the code must be manually cleared with a scan tool or will the computer eventually remove the code? Cheers |
If you are due for inspection, clear the specific code with your scan tool.

According to the PCED,
The DTC is cleared after 40 engine warm-up cycles without the fault being detected once the MIL is turned off. |

I am not sure that replacing the fuel filler tube really fixed the whole problem, all I know is that the MIL went off during the 3rd driving cycle, but as you point out the code is still in the PCM (small leak code0) by my scan tool. I would say I have 15 or so warm ups since I replaced that filler tube. Cheers |

Assuming I have the leak fixed will it still take 40 driving cycles to get the evap monitor ready? Look, if you don't have to go through an e-test soon, just reset the danged thing and drive it regularly and be done with it. |
All fixed and inspected today.
1) Cleared all codes with scan tool 2) disconnected battery for 15 minutes 3) ran the Ford drive cycle exactly as outlined by Ford 4) all monitors were set ready and no codes in only the single drive cycle 5) got inspected and passed (hey -I motorcycle all summer and this code started in the spring) 6) gave her a nice bath and wax for the winter Thanks for all the advice everybody.
