i just got a 2002, f-250 w a 5.4liter. The truck 208,000 miles, the engine on the highway sputters and jerks once every 5 sec. for a few miles then quits. Then after a few more miles it starts all over again. Took it to a dealership, fuel pump was replace, they did not say anything about sparks or cop could being the problem, but they did think the intake was leaking. The truck does drives fine after it warms up and maybe after 10 miles it starts jerking and sputtering or cuttin out, hard to tell. Has anyone had this problem and I hope it ain't the cop and plugs, that will suck *** to replace in this truck, oh well.

 

Could be a dirty fuel filter. Cheap to replace, so you might as well put in a new one and see if it helps.

 

Hard to say, I'd start with general maintenance. Clean the MAF as well. PCV valve, coils , plugs blah blah blah. I updated everything back at 185,000 and she's been running great since. After they get up there in miles, you have to do a little, not much to get them back @ full health. That's the advantages of owning a Ford truck. This site can help get you there. Yea, sounds like you need to go thru it.

 

My dad had the same issue with his 03, it ended up being he had 2 COP bad. I know you didn't want to hear that though.

 

At 80 bucks for a whole set of cops, that's a cheap fix.
