Exclamation CEL help

Ok, once my truck gets warmed up it idles very rough when i come to a stop. I have to put it in neutral and keep it revved around 1200 rpm's otherwise it acts like it is going to stall. Sounds like a diesel engine, loud metal clacking noise. I'm running 5W20 Royal Purple with motorcraft filter. Took it to Auto Zone to have code read and only code is P0453: Fuel tank pressure sensor condition. I read the DTC sticky, can anyone point me in the right direction of what/how to test, and a simplified explanation of what it means..... thanks in advance for the help

Try replacing your fuel cap.

ok ill go get a new one and report back. one question, i noticed there used to be a flap where you fill the tank, that would push up when you placed the nozzle in the fill neck, that is missing, could that have anything to do with it?

Had a simular with my 2000 Expy. The screen for the cannister vent was dirty where it draws in fresh air. Had to snap it apart very carefully and clean the screen, cleared the code and no more problem. But I had a cop that wasn't working too good either.

Hope that helps.

ok, replaced the gas cap and still runs horribly while idling. Jgger, what is the cannister vent you are talking about?

This may or may not be your problem, but.....

Back by the spare tire there is a cannister for the gas tank fumes, with out going into alot of detail if you look by the driver side frame rail you should find it or it may be above the spare. When it purges it sucks air from the outside to eliminate vapors, it is in the vapor recovery system. After the cannister there is a hose that goes into the frame rail, that is where it draws it's air from. If you remove it you can carefully pry the clips off to reveal the filter screen. If that is clogged it can cause the fuel tank to either be pressurized or have excessive vacuum, neither is good.

Like I said it may not be your problem but it helped mine.

BTW it might be easier if you remove the spare.

It's worth a shot. Good luck!

Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

A P0453 DTC is an electrical fault related specifically to the FTP sensor and its circuitry. It cannot be caused by mechanical concerns such as the fuel cap or a clogged vent hose.

The PCED has the diagnostic procedure.

FWIW, if you have a loud clacking noise from the engine, this DTC is the least of your worries.
