2006 5.4 Triton Oil Pressure

Hello everyone

I have a 2006 F150 with the 5.4 Triton engine and I am having some weird issues that I cannot figure out and neither can any garage in town. I have had oil pressure issues in the past where the mechanic has down oil changes and other things then the oil pressure came back but only for a while. I live in a very cold environment and last winter we had the mechanic do his magic and the oil pressure only came back for a day. I then parked the truck thinking it was over. About a month ago I decided to take another chance on it and had it towed to a different mechanic look at it. He said there was no oil pressure issue, I was shocked because it had no oil pressure when I parked it. He change the oil and gave to back to me and it worked. Oil pressure was fine and I have been driving it for a few weeks everything is great.

This morning after a cold -20c or -4f I when to start the truck and had no crank turn the key and had lots of electrical power but no engine crank. After turning trying about 5 times the engine crank kicked in and it started. Instantly the check gauges light came on and i had no oil pressure for two second and then it kicked in. I drove it for 5 minutes to work and when I got here I plugged it in to the block heater thinking the oil may have been thick?

So does anyone have any ideas on how to fix tis more permanently. Does it need a new oil pump, timing chain, oil tensioners? This is all stuff it read online (I am no mechanic) and is it worth it? I live in a place were the shops are $150 an hour and what I have read is any of these issues will have a high labor cost.

Any and all help will be appreciated

Yes. I recommend a Melling M360HV pump and OEM rebuild kit.

You may want to watch this video. The mechanic speaks about a typical gasket failure in the chain tensioner that drops the oil pressure. 45minutes into the video.

Have you checked the oil pressure with something other than the gauge on the dash? The dash gauge could be incorrect or have a problem. Besides, the gauges on these trucks are not really gauges. If the pressure is above something like 7 psig, it will read mid scale. It's more like an idiot light than a gauge.

What weight and type of oil are you using? What brand oil filter?

If the oil pressure is truly low, the cam phasers would probably be making a racket at idle, it will sound like a diesel.
