Won't Start

i got a 01 lightning motor swapped into my truck and she wont turn on...it cranks just wont turn on...i changed the plugs changed the oil....what is the safest way to check to see if i have spark? and if i do what else could be the problem...The motor ran 6 months ago has been sitting for 6 month due to college....any ideas?

Is the fuel pump kicking on when you turn it to the on position? Try to listen for it. If its not, then check the inertia switch, passenger kick panel. Or fuel pump relay.

Have you had it running since the swap or no??
If not, make sure all your connections at the main harness are good. Check where the poss battery cable meets the solenoid terminals on the firewall, make sure its hooked up properly. Check all your engine to intake grounds and anything else. Just keep going over it, you'll find it. Sounds like you missed something during the swap or during the plug change.

Any more details? When its turning over, is it even sounding like its starting?

I would keep checking wiring. Check back by the fuel pump for corroded wires. I forget what it was but there was an issue with some of the wires corroding. Someone clear that up for me..?

the pump turns on i got 40psi on the fuel pressure gauge... i have had it running for a couple of seconds the turned it off....i put a lightning main engine bay harness in my truck and took out my 5.4L harness cause Mike said the truck wont run right without the L harness...

Bummer

Unfortunately you are several steps ahead of me so i cant offer any real valuable suggestions. (does sound fuel related though). I am very intrested to hear more about your swap though as im getting fairly conflicted info here in town. Can I put a lightining motor in if I have four wheel drive and what else can I expect to need, purchase and/or change, what kind of additional tuning will be required, how much more power should I expect, etc...

You have to purge the injectors first or it won't fire. It may start today if it sat over night. If it bleeds down on it's own enough she'll start. Via self purge. Give it a shot.

fritz4077 May 16, 2010 01:46 PM

i have purged the injectors...if you mean letting all of the pressure out of fuel rail thats what i did...i also had to take off the fuel rail to change the spark plugs as well...

ok you guys i got a couple of questions....first off we tried the spark tester and it sparked...secondly there are a couple of wires that where spliced and ran to something aftermarket on the battery side of the engine i have pictures... so if you guys could check it out and see if it is something that the engine needs...

and these are some random wires that idk where they http://i933.photobucket.com/albums/a...andomwires.jpg on the drivers side

Hmm, Im not sure about the first one. Those Can't be engine harness connectors. They had to be truck harness, which means they were like that before the swap. There are not many (other than the main) connections from the motor to the truck.

Either way, if you have the L motor and matching harness, there shouldnt be any missing connections. Who spliced into that first clip and for what? Its a possibility it has something to do with the no start issue. I just don't know what they are, they are unfamiliar to me. Nothing I remember seeing on mine.

Lemme go dig around and see if I can figure out what they are or where they go.

Couldnt find anything that resembled the first pic on my truck near the battery. But the second pic, looks like the round 4 pin (red inside) connector goes to the MAF sensor, not where it goes into the intake tube, but follow that down underneath the mount plate and it makes a connection there. If that is to the MAF... Im sure its not going to run with it unplugged. Cant tell you what the rest of them are.

Man, that must be frustrating having a L motor swapped in there and it wont start. I would be out there 24 hours a day till it did. Taking work and everything off lol.

fritz4077 May 16, 2010 08:49 PM

ya man i messaged the guy who sold me the lightning main harness to see what was up with the spliced wires...my friend thinks he might of used an msd box or something..we shall wait and see what this dude has to say...its very frustrating that this damn thing wont start..

Toyz May 16, 2010 09:10 PM

So is that off the engine harness or the main (truck) harness?

jbrew May 16, 2010 10:00 PM

Not very good pictures, - I need to see the wires going to and how many pins being used. Wire color.

Well one is a Weatherpack add on, for something. -

On that add on, I can see there is a solid white and presumably a ground. The only solid Ford whites are trailer/tow and O2 heater wires.

Like Toyz posted The small black round one can be 2 different connects off the top of my head. Wires in would help, but it could be the CHT or MAF connect. Both of those sensors have TWO connectors. - One that connects to the sensor itself and the other that connects to the harness for PCM power. But again, if I could see wire color I could tell yuh what it's for.

Large round 4 pin, can't recall, but I have a Crown vic (2001 4.6L) harness with one of those on it. None on the 5four harness.

Clean the crank sensor connector real good inside, then reconnect. It won't start if it's the least bit dirty inside, - or if the connector is full of de-electric grease. - Cause bad contact.

You have reset the inertia correct, -or at-least checked it right ? It would help telling us everything you've done to solve. Or if your unsure about something that may play a roll, -mention that as well. Anything.

I read in another post someone cleaned the MAF and put it in backwards and had a similar problem, did you clean the MAF before you started her up again?

fritz4077 May 16, 2010 11:46 PM

its off the main truck harness....and i will take some pics of the wire colors on the sensors tomorrow...and the MAF is brand new... havent checked the crank sensor ill do that tomorrow as well...No i have not checked the inertia correct where is it located on the drivers side firewall or is it next to the fuse box?
