5.4 stroker kits
Hi i have been a lurker for about 5 years and Ihave an 04 nbs fx4 with a 5.4 3v.I hardly everdrive it because I have a work truck and so it only has 18k and is in new contion still. So i was looking to take advantage of this fact a do some work on it to make a little more "unique",and I was thinking a stroker kit would be really cool for me because it is not as common type engine mod,and I'm not a high revin racing type of guy.I was thinking maybe some ofyou guys haveseen a few of these and could offer some opions on this Idea.
Some questions i have are,Could I run a set of the newer 07 heads on my 04 block, would it be plus to run mild cams with limiter on them.Soif you guys could pass some ideas back a forth I would like to see if this is do able or just a dream. What I'm looking for is a torquey lowend tower like these trucks are famous for,I'm not looking for some racey sport truck cause it would never be fast it a truck! lol |
The 5.4 motor is already way over-square (more stroke than bore), you wouldn't really gain much from adding more stroke. A 6.2L stroker crank from Paschal Performance is $2000, add in another $2000+ for rods/pistons/bearings/machining/assembly/gaskets/etc... and you've got a $4000 shortblock. If you really want to get anything out of it you'll need ported heads and cams, so add another $2000. If you aren't doing the R&R, add another couple thousand for all the labor, and so on.... Or, for far less money you can just add a roots or screw blower and make WAY more hp and torque than that build and be done with it.
Also, '07 heads are the same as yours, there is zero performance reason to make that swap. |
I thought the 07-08 had a better plug design?

I've read somewhere that I could install v10 chains and gears to lock the cams To do away with the VCR

http://www.livernoismotorsports.com/...t.phtml?p=1701 You can also get limiters that allow you to use bigger springs and cams while still retaining some VCT. |

The VCT is something that is good to keep unless you are running cams requiring limiters. Doing away with VCT will only hurt performance in the upper or lower RPMS depending on how you time your cams. That being said, a large cam will require limiters, but on our trucks, locking out the cams is not a good idea.
You are better off just adding a Supercharger like Whipple/FRPP, Roush, Saleen, or Edelbrock than rebuilding the engine. It is easier and cheaper way to get to ~400 rwhp. The one piece plugs are nice and you could get a ported set of heads using the new design from Livernois Motorsports. They can also help with cam selection for your needs. I am going with a stock displacement rebuild (.020 over) with better rods and pistons right now with the intent of a blower in a couple years. I am most likely doing the Livernois heads with one piece plugs and some comp cams. |
