I have noticed my truck sounding a little off lately.....sounds like a diesel. I have actually had two people walk up to me in parking lots asking if it is a diesel. Well it's not. I have a 04 Screw Lariat. What could this knocking sound be?

 

If you have a 5.4, it's probably the cam phasers. LOTS of threads on that here.

 

wow.....looks like I have my work cut out for me. Sounds like it doesn't do any damage, just an annoying noise??????

btw....what the heck is a cam phaser??

 

the timing chains are slopping and cutting up the cover your oil pump will be next thats the noise you here

 

When you pull the front cover Looks like a big Y look at the inside of it Metal will be missing Guess where it goes, Right to the oil pickup tube and blocks the screen.
Timing chains get less oil, wear more, and start slapping anthing close to them. I have a motor that is seiezed at this time and will be pulling it out this week.

 

The reason the chains slack is that the tensioner o rings fail causing a loss of oil pressure. I have fixed several without further complications from the aluminum in the pan.
